Shark Tank investor Robert Herjavec, a cyber security expert, motivational speaker, and founder of Herjavec Group, has helped many small businesses on the show. He also shares business tips and life lessons on his social media.
In a December 7, 2024, Instagram clip, Robert gave advice on common mistakes when starting a business.
"People overthink it. A big bet is the combination of little successes or the avoidance of little failures," he said.
He talked about a common misunderstanding among people who don't have a business is that an entrepreneur can take a "huge bet" as soon as they enter the initial stage. He explained that taking a risk is not possible without the experience attained from previous successes. This is a process that requires patience and takes time.
The video description read:
"I never understood why people overthink this. 'A big bet’ is not something that you do overnight, it’s a combination of little successes or avoidance of little failures that you gain over time."
It continued:
"I tend to move fast, fail fast and the moment something works, I double down on it. Only a handful of people understand this and they make the ‘big moves’ that everybody’s craving but don’t have the patience to do."
Shark Tank investor Robert talks about taking risks while starting a business
In the short clip, Shark Tank investor Robert highlighted that people think taking a huge bet on their business will always benefit them. This is a risky move and an individual can only gain experience with the success they have attained during their journey. Hence, this "combination of little successes or the avoidance of little failures" helps them take a big risk on their path.
The Shark Tank star continued stating that he tends to "move quickly, fail fast or succeed fast." He elaborated on his statement:
"That's what everybody who doesn't have business think, they think you stand at the edge of a cliff you look down and you just jump off. Right? Make a big bet. I always say, Why not walk on the water and see how deep it is. So I tend to move quickly, fail fast, or succeed fast. And then, double it down. "
Robert explained that it is not easy to take a huge bet and it is not a result of something that happens "overnight." This requires "patience" and learning from the "little successes" that the business owner achieves over time. The Shark Tank investor said:
"If you walk into a room and everybody else knows the answer and it's self-evident it's probably to make a big bet to really change the course. It's usually something people haven't realized. There's margin mystery."
