Captain Kerry from Below Deck season 11 opened up about Ben Willoughby's role as Bosun in an interview with EW, which was published on March 25. After sending the initial bosun, Jared Woodin, home, the Captain had to select a replacement from the crew because there was no time to find a new bosun before the new charter arrived.

He might have appointed Ben to the role, but his interview shows that he wasn't thrilled with Ben's performance as Bosun. He said:

"He's very good at his job, but he definitely needs to stay focused and understand what the chain of command means."

This suggests that Ben might not be fully meeting the expectations of his duties or his stature on the yacht.

Captain Kerry Titheradge talks about his choice to replace Jared Woodin with Ben Willoughby on Below Deck season 11

In the interview, Captain Kerry revealed that Ben wasn't his first choice as bosun after he had to let Jared Woodin go, but Ben's knowledge of the boat led him to give Ben the post. He shared his thought process:

"I used to live by a mantra that you can teach a job, but not a personality. And I think if you can treat someone differently, maybe they might not be the ideal personality for the job. But at the time, I needed the right skillset for the job, and that's what he had."

The Captain also mentioned that to be certain, he asked Ben Willoughby three times if he was willing to take the job. By the third time, Ben was "sick of being asked a question." The Captain noted that this might give viewers an idea about the future conversations he would have with Ben.

The Captain then referred to Ben's dating history with Sunny this season and his dating history with Camille in the previous season, saying:

"That was part of the conversation I had with him about having to act different amongst the other crew. I wasn't officially aware. I was aware of his history in his position."

The captain then suggested that Ben might not last long in season 11 of Below Deck:

"I give everyone a fresh start. Hopefully people react differently to different styles of leadership. And I was hoping that he would react to a different style of leadership later in the season more than once. He came quite close to things not being very good for him. And he may not make the whole season."

Jared Woodin's lay-off and position shuffle on Below Deck season 11

Jared Woodin's smooth run on Below Deck was cut short when the Captain became fed up with his disruptive behavior on the show. The initial episodes revealed Jared's dangerous blunders, which could have endangered the crew's lives. The final straw occurred when Jared had a drunken altercation with Kyle near the hot tub.

When the captain decided to let Jared go, he quickly had to choose a replacement. He picked Ben, the Lead Deckhand, for the role and began considering options to replace Ben. Ben, in turn, promoted Sunny to Lead Deckhand, and Dylan was appointed as the new Deckhand.

Now it is for the fans to see if Ben remains intact in his position on Below Deck or if someone else takes over.

New episodes of Below Deck season 11 air on Bravo every Monday at 9 pm ET.
