Big Brother house has entertained audiences for almost a decade now. The American reality TV show first aired on July 5, 2000, on CBS. Big Brother is known for its competitive environment, dramatic altercations between houseguests, challenging tasks, nail-biting elimination rounds, and unforgettable punishments.
Inside the Big Brother House, there have been intense and often unforgettable punishments that stunned both the contestants and viewers. The rules for these penalties are clear: anyone found breaking house rules or failing/losing a task is typically subjected to punishment. At times, contestants are even punished with penalties during tasks to ramp up the level of challenge.
Some of the punishments that have kept viewers glued to their screens over the years include wearing goofy costumes, Have-nots/Slop punishment, The Tether challenge, Solitary confinement, completing a certain task 2400 times in 24 hours, and not participating in HoH competitions to gain veto, among others.
5 attention-worthy punishments from Big Brother
Wearing goofy costumes
In the Big Brother House, wearing costumes for a prescribed period is a common punishment. However, some of these punishments were nerve-racking, as players got some very uncomfortable costumes as punishment. One memorable example is Tommy Bronco's rocket costume from season 21, which was very heavy and made him slouch while walking.
Another such punishment was in season 20, when Sam was converted into a robot and had to converse through it with houseguests. The task affected her initial interactions with the players, as it was only week one, and she was not present there herself to bond with them.
The Tether punishment
In this punishment, two contestants are tied together for a day or two, forcing them to be together all the time. While it may seem entertaining, it could disrupt a player's strategy and make daily activities harder. Britney and Brenden from season 12 of the show were handcuffed together, which led to controversy as Brenden felt the need to bathe too many times during the punishment.
Another such example of this was from season 19 of Big Brother, where Paul and Chrisman were tied together dressed as skydivers. Chrisman had his foot broken and had to travel on a scooter tied to Paul for 48 hours.
24 hours of solitary confinement for Judd from season 15
The Big Brother House is already filled with ample challenges, and solitary confinement as a punishment adds to it. In season 15, Judd was given 24 hours of solitary confinement punishment. The punishment was aggravated by adding another twist to it. There was an alarm clock in the room, which snoozed every 10 minutes, and Judd had to get up every time as a part of his punishment to shut it off.
The punishment at this point almost became mentally challenging as he was constantly disturbed by the sound of the alarm. The house itself makes survival difficult, and such punishments undoubtedly etch in viewers' memories for a long time.
Brittany from BB 16 and Shelly from BB 17 doing '2400 times in 24 hours' punishment
The punishment, '2400 times in 24 hours,' is extremely physical. It demands the punished player keep on doing a prescribed task 2400 times for 24 hours. Brittany from season 16 had to keep on doing a goal 2400 times for 24 hours. The task made her mentally as well as physically exhausted. She also got her toe and back badly hurt after the punishment.
Another unforgettable punishment was from season 17, where Shelly had to fight 2400 battles in 24 hours, which was extremely draining physically. Both had their veto competition at stake if lost.
Have-nots punishment
Have-nots punishment is one of the most common punishments in the house. Contestants or teams punished have to go through disadvantages like living in a different Have-nots room with an uncomfortable bed and the infamous 'Slop.' Slop as punishment was introduced in season 7 of Big Brother and continues in this new season.
Angela Murray from season 26 was punished for losing the veto competition. The punishment was converted into an emotional breakdown when fellow houseguest Brooklyn, along with other players, ate Angela's HoH food awarded to her.
