Big Brother season 26 episode 27 was released exclusively on CBS on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Despite the reality TV show known for its shocking plot twists and format, another change was surprising. In episode 27, in place of Julie Chen show host Jerry O’Connell appeared and introduced himself to the remaining houseguests.

During the September 12 episode, cast members Angela Murray, Cam Sullivan-Brown, Chelsie Baham, Kimo Apaka, Leah Peters, Makensy Manbeck, Quinn Martin, Rubina Bernabe, and T’kor Clottey were competing for the grand prize. Jerry told them Julie Chen was recovering from COVID-19 and took some time off as recommended. He started off with the episode with a veto meeting in which Makensy decided for who she would use her Power of Veto.

Julie Chen, host of Big Brother season 26, shared on Instagram on September 12 that she was diagnosed with COVID-19. She assured viewers it wasn't serious, though she had a fever and sore throat. After recovering from her cough, she said she felt "good and strong" but was advised to stay home.

"See? Chenbot is human afterall! Love one another and enjoy tonight's show," Chen wrote in the post.

Big Brother season 26 host Julie Chen shares a message on Instagram

The Big Brother host shared she felt better but "still tested positive" in the morning before the episode aired. She mentioned she would miss all the houseguests and was looking forward to watching the live eviction episode from her house. Her Instagram post read:

“Friday morning I woke up with a sore throat and went to see my good friend who is an ENT. That night he called to say I have Covid. Unfortunately, I am still testing positive as of this morning. Despite feeling good, strong, and my cough being gone, I must sit tonight’s Big Brother live eviction show out.”

She also thanked her The Talk co-host Jerry O’Connell for "filling in" for her as she recovers. Meanwhile, Jerry jokingly called himself a "substitute teacher" on the CBS Instagram account through a video the same day. He informed the viewers that Chen was "under the weather." In her message, Chen further mentioned:

"Thank you to Jerry O’Connell for filling in for me. I hope Jerry fits into my dress, has a ball, and tells the houseguests I miss them but will be watching from home.”

Big Brother season 26 episode 27 was a shock to the audience, this was the first time the CBS reality TV series had faced Julie's absence from the show. Quinn, who was declared the Head of the Household previously was evicted from the house. This was one of the major unexpected turns the show took which once again showcases the unpredictability of the competition series.

The upcoming episodes will reveal how the remaining contestants continue their strategies to save themselves from elimination.

All newly released Big Brother season 26 episodes are available to stream on CBS and Paramount Plus. Viewers can stream the show every week on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 9/8c. Fans can follow the official Instagram account for updates and to watch interview clips and teasers.
