Sister Wives star Kody and Meri Brown were together for more than three decades until the couple decided to split in January 2023. Apart from Meri, Kody's wives, Christine Brown and Janelle Brown also parted ways with him. Currently, out of Kody's four wives, Robyn Brown is still married to him.
The newly released Sister Wives episode 2 highlighted the problems Kody and Meri faced in their relationship. During his confessional interview, Kody shared that he and Meri were still married spiritually. He disclosed that Meri wanted a religious divorce through the church, the Apostolic United Brethren.
As they got married through the church and formed a "covenant," Mary wanted to terminate it and end their spiritual ties. Reflecting on what went wrong between the two, Kody admitted that he and his former wife didn't have the "wisdom" in their relationship. He also said that Meri had some "baggage" that he wasn't prepared to deal with. The Sister Wives cast member continued:
"There's some baggage Meri had that I didn't know about. Initially, I felt like I can live with it. I can't live in a world where she is constantly angry at me."
Sister Wives season 19 episode 2 titled Let There Be Light was released exclusively on TLC on September 22, 2024. The episode synopsis reads as follows:
"Janelle considers leaving Flagstaff for good as she and Maddie look at land in Montana; Kody learns that Meri is asking their church for a release, their religion's word for a divorce; Christine and Aspyn throw Ysabel a welcome home party."
Kody talks about what went wrong between him and Meri on Sister Wives season 19 episode 2
In Sister Wives season 19 episode 2, Kody further revealed details of how Meri informed him about her decision. Then, Meri told the cameras that she didn't want to be "sealed for eternity" with someone whose relationship had already ended.
However, Kody was "hesitant" to take this step as he didn't completely believe in the authority of the church. Kody said:
"About eight weeks ago, Meri told me that she was going to go to Utah, meet with our church leaders and basically request a divorce. It's called a release in our church. However we are made accountable to God, I don't want to be accountable to this church and all their BS."
The Sister Wives star continued stating that he wanted to avoid a fight which is why he decided to let "Meri go." He mentioned:
"So I'm going to let Meri go and do her thing because if I'm angry at her, it becomes a fight. I needed her just to go away because it just took forever for her to finally realize it's been done and over for years."
Kody then shared that he and Meri lacked compatibility and understanding and they were now completely different from when they first got married. The upcoming episodes will reveal whether the couple will co-parent together and whether they will be on good terms. It will also showcase Kody's "strained" relationship with his other ex-wives.
Sister Wives season 19 episodes 1 and 2 are available on TLC. Episode 3 titled Am I Brother's Keeper will be released exclusively on September 29, 2024.
