Chavez's "Peter Cottontail" move
Derek Chavez, a 36-year-old competitor from Phoenix, Arizona, is known for his appearances on The Real World: Cancun and The Challenge. He has participated in several seasons of The Challenge, including Cutthroat, Battle of the Seasons (2012), Rivals II, and Battle of the Eras. Chavez accumulated two daily wins and faced four eliminations, securing one win.
In addition to his Challenge appearances, Chavez participated in The Challenge: All Stars, All Stars 2 and reached the finals in All Stars 4.
Derek detailed to Johnny Bananas a specific challenge that involved contestants coming up with creative names for their shots, similar to a football game. Participants had to throw footballs at a target after performing a particular move, he recalled. Chavez, known for his playful approach to challenges, decided to name his shot the "Peter Cottontail."
He shared that before the challenge, he was relaxing by the pool and watching the larger contestants play football. He highlighted how he joined in later, wearing a speedo, and quickly became competitive, outperforming others in the game.
Chavez emphasized he was determined to make a memorable impression in the challenge. He highlighted that the "Peter Cottontail" move involved hopping around before making the throw. He intended to execute the move with flair and creativity.
The incident: A risky move
Chavez described how he initially hopped toward the target as he began the "Peter Cottontail" move. He explained that he chose to increase the intensity of his movement and decided to run straight toward the target at some point. Instead of successfully jumping and throwing the football, he collided with a wrought iron gate.
According to Chavez, this resulted in a split lip and a knee injury, and the impact from the gate caused his lip to swell and his knee to suffer damage. Despite these injuries, Chavez continued to participate in the challenge.
Derek further recalled that he proceeded with interviews despite the visible injuries to his lip and knee. Although the situation was painful, he continued to remain active in the competition and his post-challenge interactions. Chavez also described how he completed interviews with a busted lip, which could be seen in the footage from the show.
"I remember interviews that I have a busted lip if you guys go back you can see my busted lip and my interviews I'm like," he said.
He further emphasized that, while the situation was not ideal, he maintained a positive attitude and continued with his role in the game.
