The Ultimatum: South Africa followed a similar format to the hit reality TV show, The Ultimatum, in which couples give their partner an ultimatum to marry or move on. In this social experiment, each participant's loyalty is tested by swapping them and their partner with someone else for a trial marriage period.
During an interview with Glamour on May 15, 2024, The Ultimatum: South Africa host Salamina Mosese shared that how they guided the participants varied based on different situations and relationships. Salamina explained there was no "definite template" to ensure whether a couple's relationship works or not. She added:
"We think that there is no definite template for marriage. You cannot blindly apply what works for us to every other scenario. Everyone experiences things differently."
However, when sharing advice with The Ultimatum: South Africa couples, she and her husband Howza Mosese reminded themselves that each participant's action was influenced by their good and bad past experiences. So the two hosts made sure to "comment and react" accordingly, as each contestant was impacted by their "relationship baggage" on the show. Salamina shared:
"Most importantly, we need to always be cognizant of the fact that people come into relationships with baggage, and that impacts on their relationships, one has to also keep that in mind."
The Ultimatum: South Africa hosts Salamina and Howza opened up about their experience on the Netflix series
The Ultimatum: South Africa hosts Salamina and Howza shared that appearing on the Netflix series as hosts was a "smooth transition" for them as they had been on screen together before. When Howza was asked what it was like for them to take the responsibility as hosts for a show in which every participant's emotions are heightened, he explained that it was a "daunting" experience at first.
Howza shared that as hosts they needed to do as well as the performers given The Ultimatum is a renowned show that had "done so well in other territories." He said:
"As presenters, we wanted to challenge ourselves to try our hand at such a big concept, especially a spin-off of a show that had already done so well in other territories. Getting to work together again after so long, was definitely the cherry on top."
As hosts, it was Salamina and Howza's duty to acknowledge each matter with sensitivity and compassion while validating every contestant's feelings. Salamina was surprised at how they felt bonded with the couples and even related to their problems, conflicts, arguments, and situations.
She explained what being a host on The Ultimatum: South Africa was like:
"We were surprised by how attached and connected we felt to the couples and their stories. The human aspect played a big role within the framework of working on this show. We weren't just delivering our scripts, we had to bring our compassion and sensitivity a lot of the time because we were dealing with real and often raw emotions."
While hosting, Salamina and Howza made sure they were giving neutral advice and providing guidance without taking any sides. They did not let their own opinions and past experiences impact their commentary, as being on the show would impact everyone's decision mostly based on how the hosts narrated their storylines.
