Shark Tank investor Daymond John believes that social media is important in driving sales, and people shouldn't miss out on it. In a December 23, 2024, Instagram post, Daymond highlighted two key reports to emphasize the importance of social media marketing. He referenced a GlobalWebIndex study revealing that 54% of social media users research products through these platforms.
Additionally, a Sprout Social report found that 51% of consumers believe the most memorable brands on social media are those that engage directly with customers. After seeing the impressive impact of social media, Daymond John shared five common mistakes businesses make on these platforms, offering valuable insights to help others avoid them and grow their businesses.
One key mistake he noticed was that businesses often used social media to promote their sales. He suggested that instead, people should focus on building a community.
"Focusing too much on sales rather than community," he wrote.
Shark Tank investor Daymond John: 5 social media mistakes entrepreneurs should avoid
1) Not planning content
First, Daymond John stressed the significance of content planning. In an August 3, 2021, video on his YouTube channel, the Shark Tank investor elaborated on this point, advising businesses to post with intention rather than posting randomly.
"When people follow you, they want to feel like you have a voice, you have an agenda, you have a personal way of thinking of things, and they want to follow what you're doing. They agree with you and they're looking for more knowledge," he said.
2) Not being consistent
In his video, Daymond acknowledged that entrepreneurs are busy and often don't have time to post. However, he reiterated the importance of social media and urged entrepreneurs to find time and post consistently.
The Shark Tank investor recommended using a content calendar to help business personnel be consistent and comply with the social media algorithm.
"It helps you get more people to see your product or services or yourself without having to pay more. And you can pay more to boost it no problem. But you want to make sure that you are consistent," he added.
3) Focusing too much on sales rather than community
Daymond believes that, on social media platforms, entrepreneurs should focus on building community and educating people rather than pushing their products onto customer's faces.
He further advised businesses not to overwhelm their audience with constant sales pitches and emphasized the importance of delivering value through content.
"So make sure you don't give people sales fatigue. Everybody's always trying to sell somebody something. We don't need more people selling. We need more people educating ourselves" he said.
4) Content is about you and not solution-focused
The Shark Tank investor explained that followers are primarily interested in what's in it for them. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the audience felt that they gained value from the content.
"We all know people that say 'Look at me, look at me, look at me'. No, no, no, no, no, no, it's not look at you. It's 'What's in it for me [audience]?' he explained.
Daymond noted that people often walk around with invisible signs that read, "Make me feel important." So, he urged entrepreneurs to focus on the audience rather than themselves.
5) Not responding to comments
Finally, Daymond advised that businesses should reply to their customer's comments. He explained that if the entrepreneurs failed to do this, their audience would shift their attention to someone who makes them feel acknowledged.
"You just lost your ambassador who was raising their hand initially to say they like you or the product or the solution that you provide for them. You make them feel important. They want to tell everybody else about you," the Shark Tank investor added.
