TLC's latest show, Forbidden Love, premiered on the channel on July 21, 2024. It follows couples who were raised in a particular conservative religion but found love with someone who follows a different religion. The couples grew up following everything their religion taught them but faced challenges upon finding love.
Forbidden Love will see couples navigate the challenges of their partner's cultural differences and religious beliefs. They risk their communities disowning them for choosing their partner. Additionally, they need to overcome the challenge of adjusting to a new religion. The show will also see one of the partner's converting to the other's religion and leaving their family for the relationship.
TLC describes Forbidden Love as:
"Their religions, traditions, and beliefs all differ, but love and connection brought them together. Will these couples be able to find common ground and take their relationships to the next level — or will their families and pressures to convert to one faith over another be too much for them to handle?"
Who are the couples featured on TLC’s Forbidden Love? Details explored
Forbidden Love features four couples: Lauri and Eli, Lindsey and Elmer, Ashley and Mohammed, and Lensa and Kris.
1) Lauri and Eli
Lauri, 36, was raised Catholic, while Eli, 32, is an Orthodox Jew. Lauri had Catholic beliefs instilled in her, but after her father's death, she lost her faith and chose to leave it.
However, when she met Eli for the first time, she learned that he was a devout Orthodox Jew, and decided to convert to Eli's religion.
What she didn't seemingly understand at the time was that converting would essentially mean that her entire lifestyle would change. She wasn't aware that, upon conversion, she would have to change her hair and clothing choices as well, apart from facing several tests.
She might be seen questioning her conversion choice, wondering whether she was giving up everything to be with her potential partner.
2) Lindsey and Elmer
Lindsey, 34, and Elmer, 23, are the second couple on TLC’s Forbidden Love. Elmer belonged to the Amish community but gave that up to be with Lindsey, who belongs to the non-Amish, English world. However, Elmer's family disowned him for his decision, and he has been struggling with adjusting to the new world.
The age gap between the two might also sometimes cause issues in certain situations. Further complicating things is the fact that they are expecting their first child.
Despite all that, the couple finds a sense of humor to keep going side by side, even during tough times.
3) Ashley and Mohammed
Ashley and Mohammed are both 31 years old. While Ashley grew up in a traditional Catholic family with a conservative background, her husband is a Muslim man
At the time of their marriage, Mohammed's twin brother wasn't happy about the ceremony, as he wanted his brother to get married to a Muslim woman. However, Ashley and Mohammed got married shortly after they met and fell in love.
They share a 3-year-old daughter, Rozie. Mohammed is expecting Ashley to convert to Islam. He also wants to raise their daughter in Muslim culture while abiding by the religion's rules. However, Ashley's family doesn't support Mohammed's thoughts.
4) Lensa and Kris
Lensa, 32, and Kris, 37, have been facing issues concerning their conversion and aren't sure who should be the one to convert. While Lensa is a Muslim, Kris's father is a Pentecostal preacher, who wasn't too pleased when he learned of Lensa's religion.
He was shocked even more when he discovered that Lensa had two arranged marriages previously. Lensa expects Kris to convert to her religion, while Kris expects the same from Lensa.
Hence, the duo can not agree on one of the biggest decisions of their lives. It is worth noting that the family and community of the person who converts might disown them.
