Rhythm + Flow: Brazil premiered on November 12 on Netflix (USA) and introduced a group of upcoming rappers competing for the crown of the rising star in the national rap scene. Judge Filipe Ret, who rose to fame in Rio de Janeiro, returned to his hometown to set up a competition between two aspiring local rappers, Muxima and Muse Maya.
While Muxima started with an energetic performance, he forgot his line midway. Filipe, visibly disappointed, expressed in a confessional on Rhythm + Flow: Brazil episode 1 that he felt very frustrated and disappointed as almost all of the guys who rapped for him were stuck mid-performance. The judge shared:
"Every one of the guys who rapped for me… they all froze, or got stuck. This feels like a duplicate of that, it has the same energy. Frustrating and disappointing."
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil judge Filipe assesses Muxima and Muse Maya's performances
In Rhythm + Flow: Brazil episode 1, Judge Filipe returned to his hometown, Rio de Janeiro. He reminisced about Lapa, the location of his upcoming rap battle, and shared that Brazil's first rap battle had taken place there.
"The movement there is very cultural. It's our best reference. Whether we're out at night listening to music or attending concerts, Lapa is the home of rap, you know? This is where I started battling," he added.
Filipe was joined by special guest judges Maru and Dallas. He introduced Maru as the "leader of all the women in Brazil" who can rhyme, highlighting her resilience and undefeated status. Filipe also shared that he had collaborated with Dallas on three albums, praising him as the "top producer in the country."
The three judges reunited at Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, where the rap battle between Muxima and Muse Maya was set to take place. They were later joined by contestants, who introduced themselves before the face-off.
Muse Maya shared that she was a 23-year-old rapper from Rio de Janeiro. She was the first to perform out of the two contestants. While it looked like she completed her song, Muse stated that she was disappointed with her performance in a confessional on the episode of Rhythm + Flow: Brazil, adding:
"I had a verse that had a beginning, a middle, and an end. But I couldn't finish it. People like me don't get a second chance in life, you know? So I don't have time to make mistakes. I forgot. Damn."
Next up was Muxima, who shared that he was a 24-year-old artist with a stutter. The writer/producer was on the Rhythm + Flow: Brazil "to give a little taste to the world."
While the contestant was relaxed during his introduction he got nervous mid-performance and forgot his lines. He later expressed his disappointment after his presentation and said that he was "mad" at himself.
Before revealing the results, Rhythm + Flow: Brazil judge Filipe shared his thoughts on the performances he had witnessed so far in the episode. He shared his observation:
"Out of all the men I heard, All three choked. Out of all three women, all three of them finished their songs, you know? So, the girls are kind of destroying the guys with their preparation and steadiness. When you aren't able to remember your lyrics it confirms to me that you didn't take advantage of the opportunity."
Filipe expressed frustration over Muxima's performance, noting that the contestant came on the show and forgot his line. He felt Muxima failed to seize the opportunity and lacked the "burning desire" needed to succeed. At the end of Rhythm + Flow: Brazil episode 1, Filipe declared Muse Maya the winner of the face-off, while Muxima was eliminated for forgetting his lines.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil episodes 1-4 are available on Netflix (USA). In the premiere episode, the four judges Djonga, Filipe Ret, Tasha, and Tracie visited their respective hometowns where they were joined by special guest judges. Along with the special guest, the judges pitted some contestants from their hometowns who would represent them in the competition.
