Captain Glenn Shephard’s patience was put to the test in season 5, episode 4 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht when Chef Cloyce Martin took an unexpected break from his kitchen duties.

On a high-stakes reality show where timing and professionalism are paramount, Cloyce’s decision to join guests on a float outing during lunch prep was an eyebrow-raising choice.

For Captain Glenn, this breach of professionalism was a tipping point, leading him to express his frustration with Cloyce’s prioritization of relaxation over responsibilities. Summing up his concerns, Glenn remarked,

"He's gotta understand he's here for a purpose. He's not a guest,"

Below Deck Sailing Yacht: Captain Glenn's frustration with Cloyce’s choices

Cloyce’s desire to socialize with guests instead of preparing lunch created a ripple effect throughout the crew. Captain Glenn was visibly frustrated when he checked the galley before lunch, only to find little progress made on the meal.

Aware that the guests would soon return from their outing, Captain Glenn radioed the crew to ask, “Does anyone know where Chef is?” First Officer Gary then confirmed that Cloyce was out on the float with the guests, which left Glenn struggling to contain his frustration.

“What the f*ck is going on?” he remarked. Glenn’s dedication to delivering timely, high-quality service led him to insist that Cloyce come back to the boat immediately, emphasizing that

“he’s not here to have fun; he needs to be ready to serve at four.”

Captain Glenn also reminded his crew that his ultimate goal is a positive guest experience, achieved through coordinated teamwork and a focus on delivering “five-star meals, not play[ing] on the water toys.”

Lunch delay and guest frustration on Below Deck Sailing Yacht

As Cloyce scrambled to catch up in the kitchen, the delay led to irritation among the guests. Some were ready for their meal by the time they returned to Below Deck Sailing Yacht’s Parsifal III, and when lunch wasn’t ready, their patience began to wane.

A few commented about their hunger, while one guest even expressed doubts about returning to the charter the following year if service didn’t improve. Cloyce’s tardiness extended the wait, prompting Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher to radio him to expedite the process.

She watched Cloyce feverishly chop herbs, clearly overwhelmed by the crunch for time. "This is so stressful," she noted as she waited, ultimately stepping in to speed up the lunch service.

While the guests were ultimately pleased with the meal Cloyce served, consisting of salmon, salad, and chicken, the delay had already taken a toll on their experience. Cloyce, in a later confessional, acknowledged his miscalculation in joining the guests, admitting he “underestimated [his] timing.”

Miscommunication and tension between crew members

Cloyce’s brief outing with the guests was just one of many points of contention on Below Deck Sailing Yacht this season. Daisy and Cloyce also had several misunderstandings regarding meal timing and preparation.

Daisy, feeling that Cloyce was attempting to shift responsibility for delays onto her, confided to Gary, “Me and the chef are gonna fight,” adding that Cloyce had tried to “throw [her] under the bus.”

Daisy, who runs the interior, expects clear communication from all crew members, and Cloyce’s actions create an avoidable disruption.
