The Challenge star Aviv Bruno recently said that allying with Johnny Bananas "absolutely" helped her advance in the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, published on December 5, Bruno reflected on her relationship with Bananas.
She revealed that their fellow contestants despised him and deliberately placed obstacles in his path. Despite this, he consistently prevailed and helped her reach far ahead in the competition.
"Did it help me? Absolutely," Aviv said. "Everyone hated Johnny and kept throwing him in, and he kept winning and saving us, so 100 percent, that helped me get to the end," she said.
However, Bruno admitted that as the contestants get closer to the end, they can only depend on themselves to reach the next stage. She explained that there can only be one No.1
"Even Jordan would've had to put Rachel in at some point potentially if she's his No. 2. You've got to count on yourself to win, and that's the only way to really guarantee it," she continued.
"Appreciate his stupid sense of humor"— The Challenge star Aviv Melmed Bruno opens up about her relationship with Johnny Bananas
Aviv Melmed Bruno finished last during The Challenge season 40 episode 15's Tight Quarters challenge. She entered the arena game and got eliminated after losing to Jenny West, who won decisively.
In her interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Challenge star Aviv Bruno shared that Johnny Bananas wasn't part of her previous season, so she didn't know much about him entering the Battle of Eras season.
She added that working as teammates on Era 2 made them become friends at first, leading to her joining the Bananas' Angels alliance.
"I appreciate his stupid sense of humor, and I didn't take him too seriously. And when there were things that I didn't agree with, I would tell him. That was the basis of our relationship — we were goofy, but then he respected me and I respected him. It wasn't like I was just going to go with whatever he said because he said it," The Challenge 40 contestant added.
Bruno explained that while she wasn't winning the daily challenges, she had a good track record during the season, which was why Bananas wanted her in his alliance.
She said Bananas realized she wasn't "a horrible competitor either" and could add value to his team. The Challenge season 40 contestant was further asked if she believed she could have made an even stronger alliance and got closer to any other male competitors. She said:
"Look, I didn't know what I was walking into. Our alliance, as everyone calls it, started just as a friendship, and we were a really strong alliance. I wouldn't have done any better on a different alliance."
Bruno elaborated further, explaining that Jordan Wiseley already had loyal allies from previous seasons. She believed it was impossible to break into their circle and admitted she wasn’t even attempting to. Instead, she emphasized that she never relied on her alliance to carry her to the finale.
Although Bruno left the show empty-handed, she was proud of her performance. She said that she had fun competing and meeting new people and shared that she would like to return for The Challenge in the future season.
The Challenge season 40 episodes are released every Wednesday on MTV.
