Thomas Joseph Lavin was born in Las Vegas, on December 7, 1976, and had an early aptitude for bike racing. The BMX legend started his career with X Games and Dew Tour. He is also a European Championship winner and a CFB Championship winner.
In 2010, during the Dew Tour in Las Vegas, Lavin, who was participating in the event, lost control of his bike during the race, leading to an accident-induced coma. TJ Lavin took almost a month to recover from the accident, getting discharged after a month. However, this setback did not stop him from further pursuing his passions and winning more accolades.
In a report by Bleacher Report published in May 2022, TJ Lavin was considered one of the greatest BMX riders of all time and was included in the USA BMX Hall of Fame in the same year on October 29, 2022.
During an interview with CBS which aired on October 19, 2023. TJ Lavin shared how his BMX career started because of a stranger he met, named Nick Herda, who also features in his Hall of Fame picture. He said during the interview:
"A guy named Nick Herda, from Las Vegas, he's in the Hall of Fame photo with me and stuff. He's one of the most important guys in my life. Just seeing that picture of him just really freaks me out. That guy changed my life, single-handedly. I didn't think this [crying] was ever going to happen. To be honest with you I haven't cried in 20 years, and to see that, it just freaks me out...he just passed away this summer."
On November 2, 2012, in Las Vegas, TJ Lavin tied the knot with Roxanne Siordia, his longtime girlfriend. After eight years of dating, the couple married on their anniversary. Lavin also has a stepdaughter, whom he has since adopted.
