The Internet gives individuals the power to stay anonymous while saying whatever they want, and USA Network's The Anonymous, which premieres on USA Network on August 19, 2024, has turned this concept into a game. Twelve players will use their deceptiveness and cleverness and do whatever they can to win $100,000.
The game will be played in two worlds - the real world and anonymous mode. The players will live together in their quarters and try to put on a friendly face. Besides their quarters, they will also get private underground hideouts and a unique handle. No one knows their fellow contestants' handles, and they must do their best to keep their handles a secret.
The players can say anything and provide unfiltered takes on their fellow contestants using this handle in their private underground hideouts. They can say one thing in their real-world quarter and another in anonymous mode to stay as anonymous as possible.
Every week, the Digital Anonymous Networking Interface, or DANI, will test players, asking them to match their fellow contestants to a handle. If a person manages to stay anonymous after the test, they will have the power to eliminate their competitors.
The Anonymous creators explain the format and rules
Producers of The Anonymous sat down in an interview with USA Network on August 13, 2024, and explained how the show works. Executive producer Tim Harcourt said that The Anonymous is a reality show and a game of social strategy.
"Players interact with each other but also have the chance to talk to each other anonymously behind a digital handle in a place called 'The Hideout,'" Harcourt said.
While in their individual pods, the players will try to identify which player is behind which handle. The player who stays anonymous gets all the power to decide other contestants' fate in the show going forward.
"One half played in the real world with their fellow contestants where they're being nice and polite and trying to get on with everybody. And then one half in these hideouts where they're operating behind these anonymous handles to say what they really think and really feel," he explained.
This concept can be seen in one of the clips from The Anonymous released by the USA network. In the clip, fans meet contestants Jack Usher and Andy King. In their real-world pods, they can be seen hitting it off and being friends. But once Jack goes into his Hideout, he starts badmouthing Andy.
Executive producer Toni Ireland explained that the contestants will live in a smart house called DANI (Digital Anonymous Networking Interface). DANI runs the show, tells everyone what to do, and controls everything.
The Anonymous' executive producer, Stephen Yemoh, added that the players will need to maintain a good relationship with DANI because the smart house can turn the game anytime it wants. Yemoh then spoke about the elimination process and teased what fans can expect.
"Every single episode is absolutely jam-packed with reality, with format, with drama, there's [an] elimination every single episode, so the drama keeps going every time," she said.
The Anonymous will premiere its first three episodes back-to-back on August 19 at 11 pm PT on USA Network. The reality show will also be aired on Bravo and SYFY at the same time. After the premiere, fans can expect new episodes on Mondays at 11 pm PT on the mentioned channels.
