Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban thinks that artificial intelligence would require a mix of humanities and technology to offer future advancements.
In a September 28, 2019, interview with GQ, Mark talked about the future of artificial intelligence and how it would provide a level of advancement that would surpass technological aids - like the iPhone and personal computers - that came before it.
However, he empathized that the development of proper AI applications would require the collaboration of human-centered perspectives with technological advancement.
"Humanities and technology in the world of artificial intelligence, have to come together. Otherwise, we're going to see all kinds of problems," he said.
Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban explains why liberal arts graduates will be an important part of AI development
In the interview, Shark Tank's Mark Cuban read a Reddit post from one of his fans, which cited his past comment on liberal arts graduates becoming more valuable in the future.
"Do you agree with Mark Cuban that liberal arts graduates will become more valuable in the future?" the Reddit post read.
The Shark Tank investor highlighted the transformative impact of technological advancements over the past few decades and emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) will be the future and that it will surpass what came before it in significance.
Mark believes that AI will bring about changes of an even greater magnitude and reshape jobs, applications, and everyday life beyond the level at which past technological advancements did.
"12 years ago, there was no iPhone. 25 years ago, the internet was just happening. 30 years ago, we were just seeing PCs, and we've come so far just with that. Artificial intelligence and the advances it'll introduce is just going to dwarf iPhones, local area networks, the internet. It's just going to blow them away," the Shark Tabk star said.
He further empathized with the importance of people with domain expertise and objectivity adding to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
Mark pointed out that if someone is building an AI tailored to specific topics like Shakespeare or customer service, they would require the help of people with expertise in those subject matters.
The Shark Tank star furthermore highlighted the need for personnel that could create objective neural networks. This would ensure that the created AI would detect and remove any biases present within the system, resulting in fair and near-accurate outputs. He said:
"If you're going to build an AI, a neural network, that is about Shakespeare, if it's about customer service and telecommunications, that's about any particular topic, you need someone with expertise not only in their topics, but people who are able to put together objective networks, so that they're able to find and eliminate biases wherever they find them."
Mark believes that humanities and technology would need to come together if someone wants to develop proper AI-based applications.
He further highlighted the importance of data and how it will become a central unit of everything people do, which will help create a world that's very different from the past.
While tech has evolved over the past few years, the Shark Tank star feels that the challenges we face as humans remain similar. Hence, he believes the future will need people with diverse perspectives (not technologists) to solve these problems.
"We're really going to live in a completely different world and even though technology might not have been the same 50, 100, 500 years ago, typically we tend to go through the same types of problems and having people with a perspective that's different than a technologist would be incredibly valuable," he concluded.
