The latest episode of Sister Wives, titled Labor of Love, was released on TLC on October 27, 2024. The episode continued to delve into Kody Brown’s relationships with his former wives, Meri, Janelle, and Christine. Brown reflected on the weight of his spiritual marriages and stated that he was “offended” at the idea of being “stuck” in the marriages.

"It offends me to think I’d be stuck with them," Kody said.

The Sister Wives' star married Meri, his first wife, in 1990, and they entered a legal marriage that was supposed to last a lifetime, according to Kody's faith. After Meri, Kody got spiritually married to Janelle in 1992, Christine in 1993, and Robyn in 2010. Each of the unions was aligned with his belief in the eternal nature of marriage.

However, recent events led to the dissolution of three of these unions, challenging Kody to reconsider his views on marriage and faith within the framework of his religious beliefs.

Kody’s changing views on marriage and faith in Sister Wives

Kody’s changing views on marriage were evident as he spoke about the complexities of his spiritual marriages and religious beliefs. When he married his first wife, Meri, in 1990, their union was legal and spiritual. This marked a lifelong commitment based on his faith, which considers marriage an eternal promise.

Kody's commitment extended to his spiritual marriages with Janelle in 1992 and Christine in 1993. Each union was rooted in legal and spiritual ties and was meant to last a lifetime. In the recent episode, Kody shared how recent experiences have made him question the certainty of his beliefs.

He said that while "Jesus said not to get divorced," it was a big concept. The reality star seemingly acknowledged the conflict between his religious values and his relationships.

According to Kody's faith, ending a marriage meant a formal "release" from the church leaders, a step that all three of Kody's wives handled differently. Meri requested a release to officially end her marriage. Christine, meanwhile, didn't feel bound by the church at the time, and didn't request the release. Janelle is still connected to the faith but she has yet to make a choice to be released from her marriage to the Sister Wives star, Kody.

Kody’s comments in the episode seemingly highlighted his difficulty balancing faith and personal well-being.

Kody's self-reflection about being stuck in Sister Wives

During a confessional, Kody’s remarks about “being stuck” offered insight into his shifting views on marital commitment and personal well-being. He said the notion of staying in the marriages that he found unfulfilling offended him.

"I don’t know what to think about it other than it offends me to think that I would be stuck with those three women."

During a 2022 confessional, Kody spoke about the separations, where he shared that he "wasn't a coward" and didn't want to quit. He added that he didn't want a divorce on his record.

Despite his commitment to plural marriage, Kody is seen struggling with the challenges these relationships have presented. Now, with only his marriage to Robyn intact, Kody’s reflections suggest a re-evaluation of his approach to marriage as he navigates the intersection of faith, fulfillment, and individual contentment.
