Netflix's survival series Outlast released its latest season on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. Sixteen contestants embarked on a journey to champion the harsh wilderness of Alaska while vying to walk away with the winner's title and a $1 million grand prize.
While some employed an individualistic gameplay, others depended on building their team morale. Joey, who started his journey as a member of the Charlie camp alongside Bri, Julio, and Meghan, found himself at a crossroads when Julio and Meghan quit, unable to endure the harsh climatic conditions of Alaska. Bri, on the other hand, had already switched camps.
As Team Charlie's last member, he had 24 hours to convince another camp to accept him to avoid elimination. He went to Team Delta in episode 4 and pleaded his case, emphasizing what he could offer them.
"I'll work for food. I mean, I'll pay my dues. I can bow hunt. I mean, I definitely pull my weight, I'm telling you," Joey said.
The Delta team members were initially skeptical about accepting a fifth member in their camp. However, the Outlast cast member's pleas convinced them of his worth, prompting them to offer him a spot in their group.
"It is the reason why I'm here" — Outlast star Joey reveals he wants to stay in the race for his family
When Bri saw Julio and Meghan's flares go off at the Charlie camp in Outlast episode 3, she admitted she made the right decision by switching to Team Bravo. She was convinced Joey would approach Team Delta because traveling around the bay to contact her team was an impossibility.
While contemplating his choices, Joey said:
"Time is ticking. And this money, I don't want it, I need this. And I'm going to do anything to win."
He visited Team Delta, whose current members were Eric, Brendon, Joseph, and Tina. Looking at their "stunning" camp, he realized the assets he brought were not as valuable as he thought they would be. As a result, he had to up his "salesman pitch" to ensure they accepted him as their fifth teammate.
The Outlast cast member hoped he could convince them of the "real value" his addition would bring to their team. Joey began his story by narrating how Bri abandoned them after getting a "hair-trigger idea" to switch camps. He then explained what caused the remaining team members to quit.
"Julio, man, he was kind of running on fumes, and Meghan too. And last night it got cold. And so...then there was me," Joey said.
To persuade his audience, the Outlast star said he had "an entire kit for an entire team," so if they needed "another hatchet, another knife, more tarps, all that stuff," he could bring them with him. However, Eric disagreed, pointing out that Joey was the man who needed help. Brendon agreed with Eric as he struggled to see the point of having an extra mouth to feed.
Seeing unconvinced faces, Joey shifted his narrative and admitted how important the prize money was for him and his family.
"This money would be everything for me and my family. It is the reason why I'm here. I mean, it's...it's a lot," Joey confessed.
He shared the story of how his wife suffered miscarriages and had to undergo multiple surgeries. While speaking to the cameras, the Outlast cast member revealed his family struggled financially when they were "hit with so many bills."
Although the Delta teammates saw Joey's desperation, they hesitated to let a competitor stay. After a team meeting, they ultimately accepted him, recognizing his honesty.
"We hate to be ruthless and everything, but we think you ought to go back to your camp and pack it back down here," Brendon said.
Joseph, who was the most adamant about not accepting Joey, confessed his "perspective changed" after Joey pleaded his case. Although Joey was grateful, he could not believe they fell for his "complete desperate plea."
Outlast will return with new episodes on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, only on Netflix.
