“I did get my hopes up”: Love is Blind: Mexico star Mafer expresses disappointment as Gerardo chooses Fernanda over her

The first episode of Love is Blind: Mexico aired on Netflix on Thursday, August 1, 2024. The much-awaited dating reality show released its first four episodes. The first episode introduced various individuals, both male and female, from diverse backgrounds. A couple of them have already found a matching connection, while some are still exploring potential connections.

A few of the individuals who matched with their choice of participants decided to move forward on Love is Blind: Mexico episode 1. One such connection between Gerardo and Mafer came to an end when he chose Fernanda, another participant.

When he shared his decision with Mafer, she told Gerardo:

"If I’m honest, I did get my hopes up thinking about you and me being together. I genuinely felt really strongly about you. It’s sad that things haven’t turned out the way I was hoping they would."

Gerardo Zapiain, a musician on Love is Blind: Mexico developed a connection with two of his fellow participants: Fernanda Riva Palacio, an architect, and Mafer Trujillo, a marketing director.

As he spent more time with them on their separate dates, he built a really good connection with both. However, he knew that he had to choose one of them. Later in the first episode of the show, he finally gave it a lot of thought, and after careful consideration, he made his decision.

When the time came to choose between Mafer and Fernanda, Gerardo Zapiain shared in the confessional:

"I never thought I would develop such strong feelings for two people at the same time. It’s hard because we created bonds that you’d only have with a partner."

On the other hand, Fernanda Riva Palacio described it as a “brutal rollercoaster of emotions.” Mafer Trujillo, 29, explained it as:

"I’m being very honest right now. My heart is beating out of my chest."

Who did Gerardo choose in Love is Blind: Mexico episode 1?

Before ending his well-formed connection with Mafer, he shared in a confessional that ending a relationship is never easy. He also shared that, in the experiment, it was ten times more difficult because they formed bonds “so da*n quickly.”

Gerardo entered his pod and told Mafer:

"The truth is that everything here is, or was real. I love you, and…the connection that I had or have with you and is real, and now the time has come to make a decision. I chose to continue this journey with Fernanda."

He also told Mafer that he would like to leave their communication open in case she ever needs somebody to talk to. In response, Mafer told Gerardo that it would have really helped if he’d put himself in her shoes because she was never his number one. That’s why she was mad and sad. She further added:

"Yesterday, in my song, I told you, “Don’t tell me that you love me if you’re not planning to stay."

She ended the conversation with:

"I hope you have a nice life, Gerardo, and I hope it turns out to be the best decision for the three of us."

He replied the same to her, thanked her, and told her that he was glad they had met. Mafer left the pod with the parting words, “Same. Bye.” While Mafer left heartbroken, Gerardo was also sad. He then went to Fernanda and proposed to her after he sang her a song.
