The finale of The Bachelorette season 21 aired on Tuesday, September 3, which saw the trials and tribulations of Jenn Tran. To the surprise of the reality TV fans, the finale didn't go as planned for Jenn as it was revealed that her engagement with Devin Strader was called off.
The former The Bachelorette couple confronted each other in the 'After the Final Rose' special, which also showed Jenn giving the final rose to Devin over Marcus Shoberg. The pair broke up over a phone call shortly after meeting each other's parents in Hawai'i. Jenn revealed that she offered to take off the pressure of engagement so that the couple could work things out, but Devin was "checked out".
The host of The Bachelorette, Jesse Palmer, talked about Jenn's journey with Entertainment Weekly on September 5. He shared his disappointment with Devin's decision to end the relationship over a phone call, with the pair having to disclose their breakup on live television.
"When I found out I felt a lot of emotions. I was sad. I was heartbroken for Jenn. I was confused. I never anticipated this happening considering everything that I saw happen between the two of them in Hawai'i," stated Jesse.
Jesse also shared that he was proud of Jenn for showing strength and bravery despite being distraught during the process. He also praised Jenn's brother, James, and claimed to be a fan of his for protecting Jenn and being by her side. Ultimately, Jesse wished Jenn good luck with her future endeavors, including her upcoming stint on Dancing With The Stars.
The Bachelorette's Jenn Tran felt Devin invalidated their relationship
As the audience was disappointed by the revelation that Jenn and Devin had broken up, the former The Bachelorette couple faced each other. Jenn expressed the frustration she felt due to the nature of their breakup and Devin following girls on Instagram, especially Maria Georgas. Maria was a cast member of The Bachelor season 28, along with Jenn.
Jenn stated that Devin "invalidated" their relationship which they had worked on for the entirety of the season. After Jenn said her piece about her frustrations regarding the unprecedented situation, Devin went on to agree with her sentiments and expressed regret for failing her. This prompted Jesse to request Jenn for her final words on the show.
Jenn further alleged that Devin had made fake promises to her about wanting to stay despite the good or bad, and didn't seem to realize that his behavior could hurt someone in the future as well. She claimed that she nurtured their relationship and gave it all, and is not the type of person who "throws it away the next day."
Devin defended himself by stating that the emotions he showed in the show were real, but after the filming, doubts crept in. He admitted that he was late in understanding the nuances of their relationship, and should have had a conversation with her earlier.
The conflict between the pair became heated when Jenn asked about Devin's whereabouts in New York City, where he allegedly went with The Bachelorette castmate Jeremy Simon to a club. Devin tried to explain that he visited the city to meet a work client, and since they were not together he could do whatever he wanted to.
Jenn shed some tears and felt sorrowful when she revealed that watching the episodes back was tough on her emotionally. She stated that Devin talked about being in love and wanted to fight for their relationship every day, and this made her feel empty. Jenn exclaimed despite Devin's words it was she who did all the work and fought for their relationship.
