During a recent episode of Sister Wives which aired December 1, Kody expressed uncertainty about how to proceed with splitting the land among his former wives— Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown— and his current wife, Robyn. The issue has become a source of tension, with differing opinions on appraisals, ownership, and the ultimate use of the land, leaving Kody saying,
"I don’t know what to do."
This confession on Sister Wives reflects the complexities of managing the property in Flagstaff, Arizona, which has been a longstanding source of tension within the family.
Sister Wives' Kody Brown's dilemma about dividing property among his wives
Coyote Pass' current state of division
The 14-acre property in Flagstaff, Arizona, known as Coyote Pass, has been a focal point of the family's plans for years. Initially, the land was meant to house separate lots for each of Kody's wives and himself, reflecting the plural family's lifestyle. Over time, however, the original vision has shifted.
According to Sister Wives' most recent episode, Kody had previously allocated two lots for Robyn and himself, one lot for Janelle and Kody, and one lot for Janelle, Meri, and Kody. After Christine's departure from the family, her allocated lot was returned to Kody.
As the tensions surrounding the division of Coyote Pass property escalated, Kody Brown suggested a new plan for dividing the land. Under this proposed arrangement, each of the wives— Robyn, Janelle, and Meri—w ould receive their own separate parcel, and Kody would also have his own plot.
Additionally, a middle parcel would be shared between Kody and Meri. This new proposal was an attempt to address the concerns of his wives and create a clearer division of the land.
However, despite Kody’s revised plan, several significant challenges remain. Logistically, the issue of accurately valuing the land and determining fair ownership continues to be a point of disagreement, especially since some of the land plots were initially designated differently and have since changed due to family dynamics.
Conflicting perspectives on appraisals
One of the central points of contention is the value of the land. Janelle and Meri have both expressed a desire to get the property appraised.
“I’m not married to Kody anymore. I’m not part of Kody and Robyn’s unit. I have to look out for myself,” Meri explained.
She added that while she hoped the process wouldn’t require legal action, she was prepared to take that route if necessary. Janelle, who has also consulted a lawyer, believes appraisals are essential.
“I believe that Kody is resistant to getting an appraisal because he knows he’s making out like a bandit. Now he wants us to trust that he knows what he’s talking about with the values of the property,” she stated.
Kody, however, dismissed the need for appraisals.
“I don’t want to put in more money. I don’t want to do appraisals. I don’t want to talk to lawyers about it... I’m not interested in doing anything,” Kody said.
Financial and emotional challenges
Beyond the practical difficulties, the property dispute on Sister Wives has also highlighted emotional undercurrents within the family. Janelle commented on the lack of enthusiasm from Kody regarding the property.
“Kody’s not really talking to me about what he wants to do. He’s not acting excited or enthused or even, like, wanting to move forward with this,” she said.
She added that she would prefer for Kody to buy her out if the matter cannot be resolved amicably. Meri echoed this frustration, noting that Kody’s name is on every piece of property, which gives him significant control over the land.
Despite this, Robyn appeared to align with Janelle and Meri on the need for appraisals, though the group failed to reach a consensus during their discussion.
As of the most recent episode of Sister Wives, the future of Coyote Pass remains uncertain. Whether through legal action, mutual agreement, or a potential sale of the land, the resolution of this issue will likely require significant negotiation among all parties involved.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 pm ET on TLC, where viewers can follow the ongoing developments within the Brown family.
