In a discussion featured on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary shared that she believed she had "missed the mark" in comprehending the severity of Robert Jr.'s challenges. Her son disclosed his struggles with substance abuse, indicating that his addiction commenced at the age of 16, while she stated,
"I just trusted him in my mind, thinking that's where he would stop. And I was clearly wrong. I mean, clearly wrong. I missed the mark."
The Real Housewives Of Salt Lake City's Mary Cosby reflects on her son’s journey with substance abuse
A revealing conversation
Mary initiated a dialogue with Robert Jr. in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City upon observing alterations in his conduct. She described him as “the perfect child” who excelled academically and was known for his determination and intelligence. Mary reflected on how Robert Jr. was a child who got straight A’s throughout his school years.
However, her perception shifted as she noticed troubling behavior, which led her to confront him. In their conversation in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Robert Jr. explained that he had been using various substances for several years. He admitted that his first experience with Xanax occurred when he was 16 years old, when a friend introduced him to the drug at a party.
Robert Jr. went on to describe how he continued to use Xanax with other substances. He further shared that his opioid use escalated over time, saying,
“You know, the regular 30-milligram Oxys [opioid painkiller Oxycontin]? I noticed, like, this is a turning point for me. I was taking 10 at once, and I couldn't even feel it. I couldn't feel it at all.”
Mary, upon hearing these admissions, was visibly emotional. She asked Robert Jr. if he thought he had a problem, to which he did not respond immediately. Mary then expressed to the cameras that she was “very disappointed” in herself, saying,
“I just feel very disappointed with myself. I feel like I let him down somewhere. I'm very aware, and I do know that Robert did smoke weed. I do know he would eat edibles, but yet I just trusted him in my mind... And I was clearly wrong."
Robert Jr.’s struggles with addiction
Robert Jr. described his substance use as a way to cope with feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction. He said on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City episode,
“Sometimes, I feel like, I don't know, just life is like this chicken without seasoning. But when I get high, it's like seasoning.”
Mary questioned Robert Jr. about his use of Xanax and other substances, and he explained how his drug use escalated over time because he "really liked" Xanax and mixed it with other drugs, leading to more dangerous combinations. He stated,
“I started doing Xanax with acid, and then Molly with Xanax, because I really like Xanax, so I mixed it with everything, Xanax and cocaine.”
Mary's emotional response
As Robert Jr. revealed more about his drug use, Mary’s emotions were evident. She responded with tears and a plea for him to recognize the severity of his situation. Mary told her son,
“I can help you... but you have to help yourself, because I'm not gonna support it. I'm not.”
She questioned him, asking if he accepted that he had a problem, but Robert Jr. remained silent. Mary later expressed her feelings of guilt and disappointment, as she shared that she felt like she "let him down."
Despite her pain, Mary assured her son that she would support him in his recovery, though she made it clear that she would not condone his drug use. In an emotional moment, Mary told Robert Jr.,
“You're blessed. You wake up every morning, every day is a new day, a blessed day to waste, to get high.”
Robert Jr. then responded by sharing his feelings of hopelessness, admitting that he had once wanted to die.
“I felt like a stain — I just felt like this world wasn't for me. You’re the only reason I didn't kill myself,” he told her mother.
Mary responded to her son, saying,
“You have to know I love you more than anything. More than anything in this world... God gave you to me. You're the only thing that ever made me happy. Before I had you, I was never happy. You came and you were so real. It was everything I hoped for in a person.”
Following this difficult conversation in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary provided an update on Robert Jr.'s progress. On November 19, she shared during a conversation with Page Six's Virtual Reali-Tea that her son was improving, stating,
"Robert is steady... He's steady, which for me is healthy, and he's doing good... He's working on himself being honest with me and not trying to deceive me. And so that right there, I think those little changes has better[ed] our relationship."
