The Boyfriend, Japan's first-ever same-sex dating reality show, which premiered on Netflix, wrapped up season 1 this week on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Much like the rest of the season, the commentators, Megumi, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui, chimed in on the cast members' relationships as they watched them unfold in real-time.

In episode 10, Shun expressed his true feelings to Dai after struggling to do so all season. Watching the former tell Dai that he was in love with the cast member, the commentators were elated and expressed joy.

As Durian got a little emotional, Yoshimi Tokui said:

"What happened though? He was sulking and complaining like such a spoiled brat. But then he finally said, "I love you." His words were powerful. I was moved."

Dai and Shun's final conversation in The Boyfriend explored

In the season finale of The Boyfriend, Shun asked Dai if they could speak in private as they said their final goodbyes to the cast members. Recalling their journey on the show, Shun stated that, although initially he was not interested in Dai, he slowly opened up to the cast member.

Shun added that he didn't want to choose Dai for the first sleepover date since he didn't want to have the same "weird feelings" he had on their first date. He added that he didn't want to date Dai since he didn't like him "that way" at the time. The cast member further added that when they decided to "reset" their relationship, he started getting "curious" about Dai.

"I think that's why it became a little bit easier for me to accept that you liked me. I saw that you were serious about your feelings. Then, slowly, I started to realize I had feelings for you, and I tried to get affection from you when I could," Shun added.

The 23-year-old artist stated that he was worried that Dai wouldn't take him seriously whenever he got upset with the latter and doubted him at first. However, recalling their most recent argument, Shun stated that he knew Dai was serious about his affections. He further mentioned how he wasn't sure until the last day about what their relationship would look like, but said he knew he was certain about his feelings towards Dai.

"And I need to tell you. Dai, I want to tell you that I love you," Shun added.

In response, Dai told Shun he loved him as well, and the two shared a kiss before they left the Netflix show together as a couple. The commentators watched the conversation unfold and were impressed with Shun being as expressive as he was.

Commentators had previously praised Dai for being patient with The Boyfriend cast member's elusive nature. In the most recent episode, they applauded Shun's progress on the Netflix show as well.

The commentators cheered for the couple, and Megumi noted how "awesome" their ending was. She added that Shun "really stepped up at the end," while Durian added that the cast member was a "smart guy." Yoshimi said he was impressed, and Megumi added:

"He shared what was in his heart and scored the goal when needed."

Durian said they were taken "for a ride by Shun" and that he "stirred up" the commentators' hearts. Chiaki added that although The Boyfriend star challenged them, he came through, while Durian added that he made them cry. Megumi noted that they "ended up loving him for it."

"We're all adults, but I think a lot of younger people like Shun feel like they need to try to test others," Thelma added.

Durian explained that Shun's initial reaction to Dai came from a place of insecurity, and Thelma agreed. She added that people such as Shun may come across as confident but are usually anxious about being accepted.

Episodes of The Boyfriend are available to stream on Netflix.
