Survivor season 47 premiere episode was released exclusively on CBS on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. In this two-hour episode, one of the contestants, Andy Rueda, faced exhaustion during the elimination challenge. Andy told his fellow cast members he planned to betray his closest alliance, Jon Lovett, and send him home.
Later, Andy joined his teammates and voted on who to eliminate from the competition. When it was time for the Gata tribe to attend the council meeting, Andy, Anika, Rachel LaMont, Sam Phalen, and Sierra Wright chose to write Jon's name. This meant Jon was no longer part of Survivor. Meanwhile, Jon wanted to vote out Anika Dhar.
The Survivor show host, Jeff Probst, opened up about the first elimination on the show. He explained that he was shocked that the majority had decided to eliminate Jon. During the recent episode of the On Fire with Jeff Probst podcast, Jeff said:
“Based on how things were after the challenge, I was shocked. I thought Andy was done and he seemed to be a massive liability for all the reasons we've been talking about.”
Jeff Probst talks about the first elimination on Survivor
On his podcast, Jeff Probst said that despite Andy seemingly being a "massive liability," he felt "kind of sad" when there was a possibility that he might get eliminated soon. Jeff shared that he wanted Andy to have a good experience on the show, as he had expected before joining as a cast member.
“I was actually kind of sad as Andy walked off, because I wanted him to get everything he wanted out of this experience, and it didn't seem like it was going to happen," Probst said.
Probst dived deeper into the "logic" of why most players voted out Jon instead of Andy. He thought maybe the game strategy was to eliminate Jon as he was a "massive threat" and save Andy, who might be "more valuable" to the team in the future.
Probst further said that maybe another strategy was to eliminate someone who had the potential to be declared the winner.
"So maybe the move right now in episode 1 is to take out somebody we all believe could win this game," he said.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly on September 17, 2024, Probst shared his first impressions of the now-eliminated participant, Jon Lovett.
He called the Survivor cast member an "incredible storyteller" who can "overthink things" at times. Probst predicted "decision-making issues" due to Jon's overthinking, but as an overall candidate for the CBS show, he considered Lovett a smart individual.
“My first impressions were what you might expect. I wrote, ‘He's amazing, very compelling, incredible storyteller. He will be great. Yes, he should be on the show. He does overthink things. This could cause decision-making issues.’ And then after another interview, I wrote, ‘He should and could go very deep. He's so smart. What would stop him?’," the Survivor host said.
Survivor season 47, episode 2, titled Epic Boss Girl Move, is set to air exclusively on CBS on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. The premiere episode is available to stream on CBS.
