Dancing with the Stars, which is currently airing season 33, is set to air its new episode on November 12, 2024. The long-running show has featured many romantic connections over the years, including a married couple who competed against one another in season 21.

The season which aired in 2015, featured Spy Kids actress Alexa PenaVega and her husband, Carlos PenaVega. The two were paired up with Mark Ballas and Witney Carson respectively. The actress finished 6th in the race for the Mirrorball trophy.

She recently spoke about her experience on the reality show during a conversation with Cheryl Burke on her podcast S*x, Lies, and Spray Tans. In the podcast, which aired on Monday, November 4, 2024, the alum opened up about navigating through the show as a married woman and said that she and Carlos had to set boundaries.

"If it was ever flirty, I'd just be, like, "I don't do that," she added.

"Our marriage is still first"— Dancing with the Stars alum Alexa PenaVega opens up about competing against her husband in season 21

During the latest episode of Cheryl Burke's podcast S*x, Lies, and Spray Tans, the DWTS alum Alexa PenaVega talked about competing against her husband Carlos in season 21. The Spy Kids actress said that she and Carlos had set boundaries about their interactions with their dance partners and despite that, it was "still hard" for her husband.

"If Carlos was doing this and I was watching this girl dance with him all close and the rehearsals or whatever, it would be so hard," she added.

Alexa further said it was "kind of rocky" for everyone because she and Carlos were married. She recalled telling their respective dance partners that while they were excited about the pairing, it didn't mean they would "ditch" their marriage and make their show partners their "No. 1."

"Our marriage is still first," Alex said.

The former DWTS celebrity contestant praised her and Carlos's choreographers or partners for being understanding on the show. She said that the producers weren't as supportive and noted that they felt Alexa did not care about the competition. She noted that although she enjoyed watching the reality show, Alex termed her time as "difficult."

Chiming in on watching Dancing with the Stars as a viewer, she said it was "just so fun" and felt good.

"Who doesn’t love a good feel-good story where they’re not great at dancing, but look at how far they’ve come. Like, that’s awesome. I love the premise of it," she added.

The Dancing with the Stars former star stated that the behind-the-scenes part could be tough but it recalled having "really, really high highs."
