American actress and author Tori Spelling recently had a deep conversation with Shannen Doherty over the falling out that the two of them had while working on Beverly Hills, 90210.
The pair reunited for an episode when Spelling appeared on Doherty’s Let’s Be Clear podcast on April 22, 2024. The pair said they could not recall what exactly led to the end of their friendship. However, both celebrities said that part of the tension arose because of Tori’s then-boyfriend, who they claimed was “abusive” both “verbally” and “physically.”
Doherty pointed out that a trip to Mexico with their respective boyfriends was a significant moment before their friendship took a turn. She said:
"I think it was your boyfriend. There was a point — I specifically remember looking at you and saying, 'You have to end it with him, or I'm going to actually kill him. Like — I can't stand by and watch this. You stayed and you got tortured for a little bit longer."
Shannen said that she and Spelling then “started drifting apart” after the trip. They also talked about the good times they spent, working on the show.
Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty recall how their friendship “dissipated” during Beverly Hills, 90210
Shannen Doherty played Brenda Walsh on the American drama series Beverly Hills, 90210. Tori Spelling played the role of Donna Martin, and her father, Aaron Spelling, produced the show. 90210 had 10 seasons, airing from October 4, 1990, to May 17, 2000.
Spelling and Doherty appeared on their individual podcasts misSPELLING and Let’s Be Clear, on Monday. They opened up about their lives and friendship during the shooting of the show.
Shannen was trying to recall the “pivotal moment” that weakened their bond, “because it's like one minute, we were friends, and then one minute we weren't.”
Tori Spelling agreed to her statement and then admitted to being a “swayer,” which she called her “downfall.” Doherty added to the alleged reason by saying:
"You were always easily swayed. And it was very frustrating for me because I always used to tell you like, ‘Yeah, Tor, have an opinion.’ Like, you're smart, you're funny, you're talented. I loved you and I respected you and I wanted you to believe in yourself as much as I believed in you."
Shannen then claimed that she believed it was due to the relationship Tori Spelling was in at the time. Although they did not name the writer's partner, the pair deduced that their trip to Mexico was one of several moments that probably culminated in their separation. Doherty added:
"There were so many really interesting moments about that time in the show and in our relationship. I can’t recall the exact rift but I’m thinking all of those things sort of collided at one time, and maybe it was just so much pressure from other people that you know, the friendship just dissipated. And then you gravitated towards others."
Tori Spelling said that because she was young she was swayed by people. She apologized to Shannen and claimed that she did not speak up for herself even now that she was 50. The actress added:
"I think when I was young, it was whoever was the alpha more at the moment would sway me. And I think I couldn't stand up for myself ... I didn't take ownership of anything. So it's like, you know, nice, nice, nice to everyone. But it's like you said, have a f*cking opinion about something. And I'm sure I did."
The pair then continued to reminisce about their friendship.
Tori filed for divorce from her husband of 18 years, Dean McDermott on March 29, 2024. The former couple have five kids together, Liam, 17, Stella, 15, Hattie, 12, Finn, 11, and Beau, 7.
