America's Got Talent reached episode 11 of season 19, the second part of the coveted Live Shows segment. It was released on August 20 and saw 11 other contestants performing to compete for the four advancing spots. These also included three Golden Buzzer-winning acts which were: Schumaker, Legion, and Sky Elements.
But the Golden Buzzer winner for the Quarterfinals 2 episode of America's Got Talent was a Japanese dance group called Airfootworks. Who pressed the buzzer first on them was the big question of the episode because as soon as Airfootworks was done with their act, Simon attempted to press the button. Howie interrupted him and rushed to press it himself.
Howie did this because he wanted the act to be under his Golden Buzzer win on America's Got Talent finale. While it appeared as though both the judges pressed the button at almost the same time, Simon kept claiming that it was he who got to it first. Howie disagreed. The buzzer eventually went to Howie but the fans remained confused about who actually pressed it.
Viewers of America's Got Talent took to X to react to this moment. Many of them thought it was unfair of Simon to steal Howie's Golden Buzzer because it was his week of using the coveted button. Others thought the moment was hilarious.
"I get it’s Simon’s show but he did the same to to Howie on champions when it came to boogie storm… its getting a little irritable and unfair," a fan said.
"I mean cool they got the golden buzzer but I don't like the fact Simon stole it from Howie," another person said.
"Simon, it was Howie's choice, not yours," a comment read.
"So does this mean Howie gets to take Simon's? Cause despite Howie going for it, it shouldn't have been anyone else's choice," another read.
Some America's Got Talent fans remembered the times Simon tried stealing Howie's Golden Buzzer on other occasions. Other viewers expressed their confusion about who pressed the button first.
"SIMON STOLE THE GB FROM HOWIE…. AND FOR THE SECOND TIME TOO ???? OH MY GOD HE WAS SO REAL FOR THIS," a person wrote.
"So if Simon is so insistent that HE pushed the golden buzzer does that mean Howie gets his week? Like sure footage says otherwise but," one fan wrote.
"ik I worded it badly… if Howie STILL had his golden buzzer INSTEAD of buzzing it for AIRFOOTWORKS all because of SIMON… there we go," an X user wrote.
Simon and Howie's Golden Buzzer drama on Quarterfinals 2 of America's Got Talent
This wasn't the first time Airfootworks performed on a Got Talent stage, they previously appeared on Japan's Got Talent's season 1, in 2023 and even made it to the finals. They also rocked the stage in their audition performance, so the likeliness of them stealing the show again was rather high.
As soon as they finished their performance, Howie and Simon gave them a standing ovation. After which, Simon said:
"Terry, I am just about to get myself fired".
He then went to press the Golden Buzzer, but Howie sensed what he was going for and placed his hand on the buzzer before. This prevented Simon from claiming the Golden Buzzer but left fans wondering if Howie would've actually used the buzzer for Airfootworks had Simon not gone for it.
The results for Quarterfinals 2 will come out in episode 12 of America's Got Talent, which will be released on August 21, at 8 pm ET, on NBC.
