Owning Manhattan is the newest addition to Netflix's library of real estate reality shows. After the explosive success of Selling Sunset, Netflix recently put out Buying London, which garnered attention because of the metropolis it was dealing in.
Owning Manhattan, which will be released on June 28, is expected to see the same frenzy, if not more as it follows real estate deals happening in the Big Apple.
In a recent interview with OK! Magazine, published on June 24, Ryan Serhant, founder of SERHANT, the real estate agency, talked about his experiences while shooting the show. He said:
"I had to think hard and long about the impact that anything we do publicly affects the brand, our agents, clients and employees who could choose to work anywhere. It's super scary!"
He included that anything going wrong would have affected the 800 people working for his company, which is why he had to give the show extensive thought. While Netflix's synopsis of the show reads:
Owning Manhattan gives a look inside the glamorous, adrenaline-filled universe of high-stakes real estate in New York City. World famous broker and CEO Ryan Serhant will stop at nothing as he builds his brokerage and goes after the most exclusive luxury listings in the city.
It continues:
And he's not alone: he's leading an ambitious army of agents on a mission to become the #1 brokerage in the world.
Ryan Serhant on Netflix's new real estate show Owning Manhattan and more
Ryan Serhant isn't new to the reality TV world because he was a part of the Bravo show Million Dollar Listing for nearly 10 years. However, when it came to shooting a show that solely focused on his own company, it was scary for him. He shared with OK! Magazine
"My name is on the door now — if something good happens, it affects me, but if something bad happens, it really only affects me".
Another thing that scared the 39-year-old CEO was the inexperience of the cast. He called it a "traumatic rollercoaster" and said that the cast was great. But because none of them had worked in front of a camera before, it was terrifying. However, despite their inexperience, the cast did great, as per the interview.
He also compared Owning Manhattan to Million Dollar Listing and pointed out how it was different. In doing so he gave hints about Owning Manhattan, which might tell viewers what to expect from it.
He said that they had a member quitting on camera. In fact, he had to fire another member on camera. He revealed that the show also had people "ripping off their microphones".
He states that they had townhouses in New York and penthouses that cost $250 million. Giving a more detailed view of the show, Ryan said, it was an amalgamation of Selling Sunset, Housewives, Vanderpump Rules, Succession, and Million Dollar Listing.
He then talked about how SERHANT got its own show. He said after featuring on Million Dollar Listing for such a long time, he wanted a show of his own company. That was mainly because he understood that his company had some good reality TV content to offer, that wasn't seen on most reality shows. He said:
"I knew what I was doing in the city, and the company we were building was so unique. It made for even better TV than what I had done on Million Dollar Listing for all those years".
He and his team put together a presentation and went to pitch it to different studios. They got many offers but Netflix's felt the best so they took it.
All episodes of Owning Manhattan season 1 will be released on Friday, June 28, on Netflix.
