Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary was interviewed by Fox Business on Thursday, December 26, 2024. During his interview, the Canadian businessman discussed his opinion about the potential for Canada and the United States to form an “economic union.”

O'Leary suggested that a merger between the two nations could be beneficial, citing what he believes is widespread support for the idea among Canadians. He noted that he thought it was a "great idea" with "massive" potential, as he went on to call it a huge opportunity.

O’Leary’s comments came after repeated statements by President-elect Donald Trump proposing that Canada become the 51st US state. Kevin O'Leary claimed that he spoke to many Canadians over the holiday period, adding that he believes at least half of the Canadian population would support such a proposal.

However, netizens didn't seem to agree with the investor as many took to social media to say that while it sounded "great in theory," it was "too strange" for them to take it seriously.

"Combining two economies sounds great in theory but let’s be real... Canada needs America way more than America needs Canada," one X user said.

People took to X to voice their opinions about the proposal with some stating that it would be "monumental," as others seemingly agreed with the investor.

"This would be monumental," another person wrote.
"However..maybe this would mean a Canadian hockey team would win the Stanley Cup finally," an X user tweeted.
"It’s just too strange for me to take it seriously," another person tweeted.
"I got to agree with Kevin and I would trust him if I was Canadian. He's a no nonsense businessman," one netizen tweeted.
"I want to hear more.. especially from Kevin. His opinions are trust worthy in my eyes," an X user claimed.
"I'm all about it. Let's get it going right now," another user said.
"This is what our country needs is more out of the box thinkers. We need to start thinking big and have input from our best business leaders. When the American people win so does business," another person wrote.

Shark Tank mentor Kevin O'Leary’s spoke about merging Canada with the US

Kevin O'Leary discussed the vision where Canada and the US would form a unified economic entity, effectively removing the border between the two countries. He suggested that such a union could strengthen the economic position of both nations, enabling them to better address global challenges.

“Think about the power of combining the two economies, erasing the border between Canada and the United States, and putting all that resource up to the northern borders where China and Russia are knocking on the door,” O’Leary said.

He explained that there are 41 million Canadians who are interested in learning more about the proposal and understanding its details. He noted that the concept of an economic union has been discussed for 40 years.

The businessman argued that it makes sense, particularly because the US needs Canada’s resources, such as power and water.

O'Leary admitted that while it was a "joke to start" with, it had since turned into a "kernel of an idea." Kevin said that if a way could be found to unite the two countries, it would create the most powerful nation, with the strongest military and vast resources. The businessman described this outcome as the ultimate prize.
