Love is Blind: Mexico is a reality dating show that explores the concept of love beyond physical appearances. Contestants talk through soundproof 'pods' and make emotional connections with each other. After deciding to get engaged, they meet in person and embark on a romantic retreat to deepen their understanding of each other.
In the third episode of Love is Blind: Mexico, René and Irais became the first couple to leave the show. The couple, who initially bonded when they started talking through the pods, faced challenges in person.
René was pretty certain about his decision even after the face-to-face meeting. However, Irais felt a disconnect between them upon meeting René in person.
As the Mexican adaptation of the series, the show brings a new cultural lens among the viewers.
From Pods to Proposal - Rene and Irais’s Journey in Love is Blind: Mexico
At the beginning of episode 3 of Love is Blind: Mexico, René expresses his disappointment about not talking to Irais for the last two days. He asks her to be transparent with him. Irais apologized and told him that she had experienced abuse in her previous relationships, and René's drinking habit concerns her.
She says to Rene:
"It took me a lot of therapy to get out of there, and I feel like, if I were to return to that place, then that would be something really, really hard for me."
René understands her perspective and assures her he won't do anything like that. He tells her that she can count on him. They continued spending time with each other talking through 'pods'. They express their intention to be with each other exclusively, and Irais responds:
"Take the screen away, we're ready, we don't wanna see anyone else."
He asks her what comes into her mind about a life together. She replies adventure, collaboration, travel, and lots of fun. They speak about their financial plans; René says he believes in spending all the money at once, whereas Irais says she believes in saving and keeping a monthly budget.
The conversation gives them a glimpse of the differences they have with each other in Love is Blind: Mexico. She confesses that one of her family's ongoing concerns is that illnesses can destroy savings, and she worries that if she decides to give him to her partner, this could happen to her as well.
The Reality Check: Why Irais Felt Disconnected in Love is Blind: Mexico
The moment when René and Irais finally met face-to-face was filled with a lot of expectation, but it quickly turned into a reality check for the latter. René, who had built a mental image of Irais during their time in the pods, was happy to put a face to that voice, and it matched exactly as he thought it would. However, Irais felt a disconnect between their conversations and meeting him in person.
She says:
"No, this isn't my guy, you switched him. Mine sounds different. I didn't like the piercings, I knew he had one in his ear, I didn't know he had one in his nose. I really didn't like it."
She expressed that he made her feel as though she was hugging a stranger, and she was unable to sense the connection she felt with him through his voice. The emotional bond they had formed in the pods didn't seem to align with her expectations, leading to a sense of confusion and disappointment. This led to their elimination from the show.
Finally, the host announces in Love is Blind: Mexico:
"Irais, since there wasn't a match between you and Rene, the both of you must leave the experiment."
Love is Blind: Mexico's first four episodes are currently streaming on Netflix.
