Love Never Lies: South Africa premiered on Friday, November 29, 2024. Six couples participated in the social experiment to rejuvenate their relationships. They aimed to resolve their conflicts and strengthen their bonds. However, tensions rose and drama unfolded as the pairs faced the challenging questions posed by the lie detector, EyeDetect.
For the unversed, the show's format allowed each couple to walk away with a 1 million Rand prize. However, they would lose money every time they lied to EyeDetect. By the end of the experiment, the couple with the most honest relationship would walk away with the prize pot.
Episode 1 saw six couples arrive at the villa, hoping to leave the experiment with renewed relationships. While some struggled to trust one another, others tackled intimacy issues. Later, they faced their first lie-detector ceremony, where each cast member was asked difficult questions.
Kuda's disloyalty and Nikiwe's communication with her ex caused much drama. While Wilfred forgave Clayton for cheating on him, Nancy got emotional after discovering her partner lied to avoid intimacy.
The official synopsis of episode 1, titled Love Gets A Lie Detector Test, reads:
"Minnie meets the six blissfully in-love couples, and from the get-go puts them under the pressure of a lie detector questioning."
What happened in Love Never Lies: South Africa episode 1?
Munaka and Gontse were the first to arrive at the villa. They described their relationship as a companionship, however, it had its own challenges. While Munaka sought commitment, vulnerability, and transparent communication from Gontse, the latter preferred to approach the relationship more casually.
The second pair was Wilfred and Clayton, who had been dating for a year and eight months. During his introduction, Clayton revealed that he had cheated on Wilfred in the past. Wilfred mentioned that they separated for a while after the incident but eventually reconciled. However, the Love Never Lies: South Africa star still had his doubts.
Kuda and Lynn were the next couple to join the cast. They had been dating on and off for seven years and wanted to work toward marriage. However, Kuda's female friends and his active social life often wedged a gap between him and Lynn.
Nikiwe and Naledi were the fourth pair to enter the villa. Naledi identified as a nonbinary trans man, while Nikiwe was a pansexual woman. They had recently proposed to each other and looked forward to starting a new chapter in their lives. Meanwhile, Nikiwe revealed that she was previously engaged and got intimate with her ex-fiance during their separation.
"That's my deal-breaker," Naledi said.
The penultimate couple was Siya and Pretty. During a confessional, Pretty stated that she fell in love with Siya when he was with someone else. However, she later discovered he also had a "side chick." They formally started dating after he cut ties with both women. Although Siya cherished Pretty, he felt physically not enough for her.
The last pair to join the cast of Love Never Lies: South Africa was Bohlale and Nancy. Bohlale was a father to a 5-year-old son and wanted to strengthen his relationship with Nancy. Meanwhile, Nancy aimed to become the "powerful couple" and resolve their intimacy issues.
After introductions, the Love Never Lies: South Africa cast prepared for their first-ever lie detector ceremony. Host Minnie told the couples they would start with an R500,000 prize pot. Every truth would add R10,000 to the total, while every lie would deduct the same amount from the pot.
Relationships were tested once EyeDetect began revealing the participants' answers to its questions. Munaka disclosed that she had kissed another man during her three-week break from Gontse. Meanwhile, Gontse revealed he had been physical with her best friend. Since both statements were true, this added R20,000 to the prize pot.
When EyeDetect confirmed Nikiwe's answer that she still harbored feelings for her ex, Naledi said she felt disappointment and "pinches of gaslight-iness." Nikiwe defended herself by saying she had to interact with her ex because of their son. However, Naledi was unconvinced.
Pretty and Siya clashed when EyeDetect revealed that Pretty left her clothes at her ex-partner's house to stay in touch with him. The Love Never Lies: South Africa star mentioned that she saw nothing wrong in her actions because Siya maintained communication with his ex too.
Wilfred and Clayton were up next. Although Wilfred answered otherwise, EyeDetect revealed that he had forgiven Clayton for cheating. However, the Love Never Lies: South Africa star's hopes were crushed when the test confirmed that Clayton flirted with other people in his absence.
"I know what I'm doing is not right and I need to do better," Clayton said.
Nancy got emotional when EyeDetect disclosed that Bohlale sometimes lied to avoid getting physical with her. Bohlale explained that he could not engage because he felt stressed most of the time. However, Minnie advised him to change his ways since it could make a woman feel "undesirable."
Meanwhile, the lie detector mentioned that Nancy suspected infidelity on Bohlale's part, but the male cast member reassured her of his loyalty. The last Love Never Lies: South Africa couple put to the test was Kuda and Lynn. Lynn was shocked when EyeDetect revealed Kuda had been physically intimate with other women during his weekend getaway and lied about it.
