Love Island UK star Tommy Fury opened up about his breakup with Molly-Mae Hague, attributing their split to his struggle with alcohol. The couple, who met during season 5 of Love Island UK in 2019, had been together for five years and even got engaged in 2023 after welcoming their daughter, Bambi. However, in August 2024, the couple shocked fans by announcing their separation.
In an interview with Men’s Health UK published on January 15, 2024, Fury dismissed rumors of infidelity and revealed the real cause of their breakup. The 25-year-old clarified,
“We broke up because I had a problem with alcohol, and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore. It kills me to say it, but I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink.”
The former Love Island UK runner-up admitted that his mental health began to deteriorate after a boxing injury, leading him to use alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Love Island UK star Tommy Fury addresses relationship struggles
Fury strongly denied the cheating allegations that surfaced in the wake of their breakup, calling them “complete and utter b*ll*cks.” He addressed the rumors surrounding his breakup with Molly-Mae Hague, stating that much of what has been reported in the media over the past six months is completely false and did not come from either him or Molly-Mae. Fury said,
“All I’ve been seeing for the past six months is, ‘Cheater!’ ‘He slept with me!’ ‘He slept with this girl, he slept with that girl!’”
He then emphasized that these claims were false and that the real issue was his struggle with alcohol. Reflecting on the public scrutiny, Fury expressed disappointment at the lack of empathy he received. Tommy Fury revealed that no one asked what was happening in his life during the breakup, further sharing that his inbox was filled with "millions" of negative messages.
The Love Island UK alum emphasized that he wasn’t seeking sympathy, acknowledging that people would criticize him regardless of his actions and adding that what mattered most to him was the love and support of his family. Fury stated that the reason behind his breakup “was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing,” further adding,
“If you’re in the same spot as me, where you just think that it’s going to cure all your problems, it doesn’t. You wake up even worse and you want to drink more to try and feel happy again. That’s the cycle of it.”
Fury also mentioned that his priority as of now is rebuilding his life and career. He expressed his goals, saying he wants to focus on his boxing fights, earn money, and take care of his daughter. Signaling a positive outlook for 2025, he stated,
“Positivity breeds positivity.”
Molly-Mae Hague speaks on their "complicated" relationship
Meanwhile, Molly-Mae Hague has remained candid about the challenges of navigating their public breakup. In August 2024, she confirmed their split through her Instagram Story, writing,
“After five years of being together, I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way. I am extremely upset to announce that mine and Tommy’s relationship has come to an end.”
However, as per BBC News on January 16, 2025, photos recently emerged allegedly showing Love Island UK stars Hague and Fury kissing at a New Year’s Eve party, sparking rumors of reconciliation. When asked about the situation, Hague neither confirmed nor denied the reports but acknowledged the complexity of their relationship.
“This is a whole new territory for me. Tommy and I, our relationship has always been in the public eye, but to deal with this breakup, with millions of eyes watching, it is hard, it is complicated,” she told reporters.
Hague also dismissed speculation that their breakup was a publicity stunt, calling such claims “very painful.” She added,
“I wish it was a publicity stunt, because it would be a lot easier. Because going through all of this, with the turmoil of a breakup, has been incredibly hard... Tommy and I have a baby together, and it’s very, very real.”
