Maria opens up about her father's passing away in Love Is Blind UK
Maria met Tom in episode 2 of Love Is Blind UK via Pod. Maria is a 30-year-old makeup artist who hails from Southampton. She has Moroccan ancestry as she mentions to Tom. She also shared that dating in her culture is frowned upon, but her immediate family supports her. Tom is a 38-year-old PR and advertising consultant from London.
Maria and Tom discussed what sort of qualities they are looking for in their partner, to which Tom shared that,
"I am pretty big on, like, personal growth and self development."
Maria seemed curious to know more about his perspective. Tom explained that this perspective comes from his upbringing. He said,
"I come from, like, a single-parent family, like, a broken family. My mum and dad broke up when I was four, and I would see him maybe once or twice a year. So I went to live with my dad for one year and then went away on holiday with my mum. And when we got back from holiday, he'd done a runner. Just disappeared."
Maria validated his feelings and acknowledged that being vulnerable is scary, especially if you have such a family history.
This conversation in episode 2 led Maria to open up about her father's death. She discussed that in the background she comes from, they are taught to get on with difficult times, instead of crying or being sad, and showing the vulnerable side to people makes you look weak.
She then added about her father passing away,
"I lost my dad a couple of years ago. And, um, he went to Morroco to say his goodbyes cause he had terminal cancer. And then he was supposed to come back, and it was at the height of COVID. And Morocco locked down, and he ended up passing away, so I never got to see him."
Maria expressed how great her father was, and it was so unfair for him to go so early. Tom consoled her, and both ended their conversation by graciously thanking each other for sharing something so personal and deep.
Maria and Tom met for the second time in episode 2, and although Tom felt a connection with Natasha, he said in a confessional,
"And then Maria is someone who maybe doesn't slot into my life, like, as easily as Natasha would, but she's the person who I could imagine just, waking up with every day."
Tom and Maria ended the conversation on a cheerful note, sharing that they would love to share time and explore more.
The first four episodes of Love Is Blind UK are streaming on Netflix now.
