Sister Wives season 19 released its latest episode on Sunday, September 22, 2024. In an episode segment, Meri disclosed she wanted to terminate her marriage with Kody. To get the "release," she needed to meet with her church leaders in Utah, who allowed her and the other sister wives to be in a marriage "covenant" with Kody.
However, Kody resisted her decision, not wanting to acknowledge the authority of the church leaders. Nonetheless, he wanted Meri to walk away from him, confirming there was nothing alive in their relationship.
He said the Meri he married was completely different from the Meri he currently knew. He blamed her anger issues for their downfall and pointed at the dysfunctionality between them after Janelle and Christine walked into their lives. According to Kody, Meri lost her kindness and niceness at that point, boring him.
He held the sister wives accountable for kicking him out of their lives. Sister Wives fans took to X to criticize Kody for speaking ill of Meri. They claimed it was unfair to put all the blame on Meri and the other sister wives for his failed relationship.
"I don’t even like Meri but the way Kody speaks about her is a special kind of heinous. That’s absolutely nothing she did — despite whatever mistakes she did make — to deserve that kind of poison from this living, breathing piece of s**t," another fan commented.
"The way Kody talks about Meri is atrocious. Like if you don’t love her that’s fine, but honor the decades you shared and be respectful," one netizen tweeted.
Many Sister Wives fans disapproved of Kody's remarks about Meri and her personality.
"“It took forever for her to finally realize”, yeah, Kody, because you kept giving Meri breadcrumbs for years and never actually releasing her. What a piece of s**t to sit here and say he needed her to “go away”. A mother to his children. Unbelievable!" a user reacted.
"I’m sorry kody is p***ed when they family talks bad about him… but he has NO ISSUE! BEING extremely rude and cruel to meri?!" another fan wrote.
"Kody, about not wanting to go thru the church to "divorce" Meri, and her finally leaving: "I needed her to just go away." He calls her mean, boring, and essentially unlovable, among other gross things. He's a pig," one user tweeted.
At the same time, Sister Wives fans criticized Kody for holding Janelle and Christine accountable for the downfall of their marriage.
"Dear TLC you need to move this show to the present. Kody clearly doesn’t want to accept responsibility for his actions and it is extremely sickening to hear him badmouths Meri, Janelle and Christine," another person reacted.
"Kody was too much of a coward to actually tell Christine, Meri, and Janelle that it was over. Instead he pushed them out and mistreated them until they left," a netizen commented.
"I needed her just to go away" — Sister Wives star Kody reflects on his fallout with Meri
Kody became hesitant when he learned that Meri wanted to get an official "release" from her relationship with him by appealing to her church in Utah. He confessed he did not want to be held accountable to the church or their antics. Meanwhile, Meri was determined to completely separate herself from her ex-husband, revealing she had been "in limbo" for the past decade.
Nonetheless, Kody mentioned he would let Meri "do her thing" because he did not want any further arguments with her.
"I needed her to just go away because it took forever for her to finally realize it's been done and over for years," Kody said.
The Sister Wives star reflected on his relationship with Meri, saying "she was very different" when he first married her. He mentioned he could not live in a world where she was constantly angry at him. Kody blamed Janelle and Christine for deluding his relationship with Meri.
Since he could not appeal for a divorce in a polygamous marriage, Kody said he tried to reconcile and work on his relationship with Meri. However, he said whenever he was with her, she was "not nice."
"She wasn't fun, she wasn't kind, she wasn't interesting. I'm trying to be curious with her and I'm bored," Kody said.
Although he acknowledged Meri felt "abandoned," he said he was not the one to blame for it. Despite not loving any of them, he did not plan on severing ties. Consequently, he held the ladies accountable for their actions.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 pm ET on TLC.
