Selling Sunset season 8 premiered earlier this week on Friday, September 6, 2024. The latest installment of the popular Netflix reality show centered around The Oppenheim Group and saw the cast's personal and professional lives on display.

In episode 8, Jason Oppenheim delivered bad news to his ex-girlfriend and co-star Mary Fitzgerald. He told them their dog Niko was battling end-stage kidney failure and had few days left. The two cried together. In the same episode, Brett told the cast about Niko's ailment and that he had passed away.

In the following episode, Jason and Mary arranged a funeral and bid Niko farewell. Fans of the show took to social media to express their thoughts about the ordeal and were divided by the funeral. While they agreed that losing a pet was tough, they felt a funeral was "bonkers." One person wrote on X:

"This dog funeral on #SellingSunset is bonkers. I know losing a pet is painful, but this is outrageous lol"
"The dog funeral on #SellingSunset is hands-down one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen on tv," a fan commented.
"I understand being upset about a dog. When my dog passed, it was awful. But this dog dying for five episodes of #SellingSunset is a lot" a tweet read.

Some Selling Sunset season 8 fans praised the funeral arrangement and called it "iconic."

"Absolutely iconic that they’re having a dog funeral on #SellingSunset," a person wrote.
"My first reaction was to laugh at the dog funeral on Selling Sunset but then I immediately changed my mind. Why not? Pets are so important to us. It’s good to celebrate their lives with the people that matter to you," a fan commented.
"If I could have given my dog a funeral like this I would have. 18 years with your furbaby is such a blessing," a tweet read.

Selling Sunset season 8 fans further said:

"I really appreciate seeing everyone take the funeral for Niko seriously and not joke around and laugh about how he’s just a dog during the ceremony like I’ve seen on other shows. If ur good as an animal owner then it’s like losing a child and deserves respect," a person wrote.
"Can't believe they had a funeral for a dog I'm laughing about it and crying at the scene bc I'm pmsing lmao wtf," a fan commented.

Selling Sunset season 8: Jason and Mary bid farewell to Niko

In Selling Sunset season 8 episode 8, Jason told Mary he took her chihuahua pet, Niko, to the vet since he hadn't been eating. He told her that the pet's kidney levels were high. He revealed that they said Niko had "end-stage" kidney failure and that he only had days left.

Mary was in disbelief and said there had to be something they could do. In a confessional, the Selling Sunset season 8 star stated that Niko had been a part of her life for 18 years and that he had always been there for her.

In the same episode, Brett informed the rest of the cast that Niko had passed and they decided to host a dinner to support Jason and Mary. At the gathering, the former couple revealed they got tattoos in memory of Niko. The Selling Sunset season 8 cast members also shared that they had their pet's ashes mixed with the tattoo ink.

In episode 9, they hosted a funeral at Mary's house. As Mary and Jason addressed the crowd, the latter got emotional. He said Niko had a loving and "vibrant" life. Mary chimed in and said Niko changed her life.

"I was just such a bond. I'd take him to open houses, take him to showings, uh, the office. He was a papa's boy, and I was wrapped around his paw. I mean, it was a pretty great friendship," Jason added.

Selling Sunset season 8 fans were conflicted about the funeral and expressed themselves online. While the majority agreed that losing a pet was painful, others felt the funeral was "a lot."

All episodes of Selling Sunset season 8 are available to stream on Netflix.
