Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland reveals breast cancer diagnosis eight months after "clean results"

Kelly Hyland, best known for her stint on the show Dance Moms, spoke about her recent breast cancer diagnosis, a piece of news that shocked the reality TV star after getting “clean results” for a test she’d done eight months prior.

In an interview with E! News, Hyland opened up about how she came across a lump in her breast in March that prompted her to seek medical advice. She recalled her “significant weight loss” despite not changing a thing in her diet that could cause a major drop in her weight, which she called the “first red flag.” The reality TV star explained further that she also found a lump in her breast.

“I booked myself a mammogram. I had just had one done eight months prior and the results came back clean. However, this new mammogram and sonogram did not, it came back showing a mass.”

The Dance Moms alum further noted that her worst fears were confirmed after she was given more details of the diagnosis—it was malignant.

Following the initial results, Kelly Hyland recalled doing subsequent testing, which led to her official diagnosis of “carcinoma stage 1, grade 3.” The reality TV star admitted that the diagnosis had “shocked” her, especially after the “clean results” of the mammogram she had less than a year prior. She said:

“I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months. I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.”

Following her diagnosis, Kelly Hyland shared the news with her children, informing them of the results in a four-way call so they were “given the same information” at the same time. She admitted that it “was a very hard conversation” for all of them.

Later, Hyland also shared her breast cancer diagnosis with fellow Dance Moms alums and focused on keeping her life “as normal as possible.” She continues taping her podcast Dear Dance Mom with former costars Melissa Ginosi, mom of Maddie Ziegler and Kenzie Ziegler, Holly Frazier, and Jill Vertes.

Kelly Hyland, who’s admittedly a “very independent person,” also shared the “toughest part” of her cancer diagnosis with E! News. She said:

“The toughest part for me has been accepting help from the people around me. I am a very independent person and, as a mom, I’m used to being the one taking care of people, not the one being taken care of.”

Kelly Hyland is currently bunking at her older sister and “main caretaker” Carrie Matarazzo and her husband Dom’s home while receiving treatment in Pittsburg. She’s currently at the second of the six initial chemotherapy treatments before she undergoes surgery.
