Netflix's popular competition series Outlast concluded its second season on September 11, 2024. Sixteen survivalists took on the challenge to try and conquer the Alaskan wilderness while competing for a grand prize of $1 million. After championing fierce competition and extreme weather conditions, Drew and Drake from Team Bravo emerged as the winners, each walking away with $500,000.

While some contestants prioritized fair gameplay, others preferred outsmarting their opponents to advance in the competition. Bayo Hernandez was one such player who not only strived to better his team's performance but also attempted to undermine his opponents' efforts.

In episode 1, two members of Team Alpha (Bayo and Zach) visited their neighbors, Team Bravo, to check on their progress. Their visit took a turn for the worse after Bayo stole Team Bravo's cooking vessel and water cans, intending to weaken them. Feeling blindsided by Bayo's surprise act, the Alpha campers compelled him to eliminate himself.

In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda, Bayo opened up about his strategy, explaining why he attempted to outwit Team Bravo. He also shared his opinion on Zach's leadership, Team Alpha's overall performance, Drew and Drake's victory, and his experience on the show.

Speaking about his strategy against Team Bravo, the Outlast star confessed he wanted to eliminate his competitors early by jeopardizing their game. He said:

"The act of surprise works a lot better when you are in the proceed of a mission. And we surprised them. I told you from the get-go that everything was exposed, everything was laid out outside and I took the opportunity to take all the drinking tools — to boil, to drink, and to hold something; and the big pot that was the cooking pot."

Bayo continued:

"Everything in Alaska, you have to cook, except the plants. Even the plants you have to cook sometimes. I weakened them. I know, for sure, I did."

Outlast season 2 star Bayo claims Zach gave the "winning ticket" to Team Bravo

Q) How did you decide to be a part of this show?

A) There is an audition, as far as questioning [goes], you know, what do you do; just be true, be yourself, answer all the questions. That's just the way it is. We're not movie stars. We are regular people of society. We got picked.

Q) What was your strategy going into Outlast?

A) One of the rules was that you could take anything around the shelter that was exposed. You could take it, which is what I did. But you had to respect the shelter, had to respect everything inside the shelter. You couldn't touch it, all you could do was look at it. The pots, everything that I took, was exposed. That was one of the rules that they [Team Bravo] failed to protect.

Q) If you had the opportunity to pick your team of four, who would you have picked?

A) Oh, Mountain Man. Definitely, Tre, and I'm gonna say Joseph. For sure.

Q) According to you, which Outlast team was the strongest? And which was weakest?

A) Delta was the strongest. Definitely, those boys could have made it longer than anybody else. The weakest, of course, was Charlie. Definitely. Right from the get-go.

Q) As someone who experienced the harshness of Alaska, what was the worst part of it all?

A) Everything. Everything was difficult. Not enough fire, not enough warmth, not enough food. Water was okay. We had a stream nearby, we collected water from the rain, and we had a fire to boil the water. So, that was okay, but not having enough calories was tough on the body.

Q) You mentioned in the show that "Nothing gets away from Trapper Bayo." So, how did it feel to be able to feed your Outlast team before Zach?

A) It felt amazing. It felt productive. I felt good to bring something to the table for my team because we needed protein. I had no doubt in my hunting skills. Much superior than Zach.

Q) What would you say about Zach's leadership on Outlast?

A) Oh, very weak. Whatever my actions were in the game, when I became a team, the so-called Alpha team, you know, it's like a baseball game. When one throws a punch, everybody throws punches. That's a team, believing in the other. Once again, when I had the first kill, he [Zach] felt threatened, "Oh, I'm no longer the hunter I assumed I was."

He kept coming back to the camp after a day of hunt [saying], "Oh I came this close. Oh the cameraman was too noisy" Every excuse, always. Everybody was hungry, and I took charge. That's when it comes, "Nothing gets away from Trapper Bayo."

Q) Do you think your Outlast team made a mistake by forcing you to flare out? Do you think it affected their gameplay?

A) Oh yes, they did. We could have gone longer than Bravo, Delta, and of course, Charlie fell apart by itself, but we could've won the competition.

Definitely yes, because they got rid of one of the strongest links. The other strongest link was Tre. Tre and myself, if the game would've gone on, and Zach would've, like he did, hurt himself, Tre and I could've won the competition for sure. But we had a little girl going behind my back, who convinced everybody else. That's not a good game to play.

Q) If given another chance, would you have acted differently?

A) Definitely not. It's the act of surprise, an opportunity. Right from the get-go, they take all your cooking and drinking pots, and you're done. It's only a matter of a day. You can get lucky but my Bravo boys are the luckiest ones here because the captain of Alpha made them stronger. There wasn't going to be an alliance. In a chess game, there's no alliance.

Q) What is your take on the Outlast cast members' reaction to your elimination?

A) All the reaction from all the teams was because of his [Zach's] influence, you know, "Oh I'm the captain. I'm the leader. I'm the hatchet-holder, so let me you what to do." Monkey see, monkey do, you know.

Q) Do you think Tre made the right choice by flaring out after Tonia?

A) He had the chance to switch camps, only because he was the one who went back to Bravo camp and gave them the pots back. So, by his actions...he had a chance more than anybody else to join that team. Not to be begging, but he had a chance. So, I'm gonna say that he made a mistake by flaring out.

You know the 'no' already, you gotta look for the 'yes', and hopefully, it's there.

Q) Looking at the Outlast winners, Drew and Drake, do you think they deserved the victory more than Team Delta?

A) I'm gonna say that the Bravo team is the winner. They won the competition; they are hardcore individuals just like the others. They showed their winning strategy, but I'm gonna tell you, they got lucky by Zach giving them back their tools. That was the winning ticket for them. Without that, they wouldn't have won. Anything can happen but Zach gave them the winning ticket. Thanks, Zach.

There were a few more members of the Delta team than Bravo. Man, it was a very close race to the end. There were a few members who were ill, but Mountain Man, was a hardcore individual. [He] had a bad knee, I don't know if that was one of the factors of them being behind a little bit.

Tina, she was kind of feeling bad. Eric, very strong. Joseph, strong. And let's not talk about Joey. Very strong as well, but there were more members than the other.

Q) Do you think the Outlast winners made the right choice by convincing Sammy to flare out?

A) We are in a game. They either did the bad thing or the good thing. Sammy was ill. I heard he was having palpitations. I don't know, that's what the Texas boys said. It is a game. Only the strong survive and my Bravo boys did it. They tried that strategy of taking Sammy out, and it worked for them. For sure.

Q) Are you in contact with the other Outlast cast members?

A) Every single one of them, except Zach. I don't care for it, honestly. He gave them the winning ticket. The Bravo team could tell you otherwise but in my vision, Zach messed up and gave them back the winning ticket.
