The Boyfriend aired its final two episodes on July 30, 2024, which saw the end of the nine men who spent time in the Green Room getting to know one another. One such cast member was Gensei, who entered the show on Day 1 and expressed an interest in Ryota since he joined the show.
Although most cast members' journey came to an end in episode 10, Gensei chose to leave the setting earlier and left the show in episode 9. After working his last shift with Ryota, he told the cast member that his days in the Green Room were "fulfilling" and said one of the reasons he had so much fun was because Ryota was there. Gensei expressed his true feelings to the cast member and then told him his decision to leave the show.
Fans of the show took to social media to react to the early departure and were sad to see Gensei leave. One person wrote on X:
"feeling heartbroken for gensei. he was brave for finally confessing like this. i just wish he could've had the love story he deserved TT #TheBoyfriend"

The Boyfriend fans complimented Gensei for opening up about his feelings to Ryota before he left:
"Gensei is such a beautiful soul. The unconditional love he had for Ryota was so pure. I hope he finds the love he deserves because even though he was rejected he never faltered to make Ryota happy. Even at the end, the “your a catch”. What a man. Gensei is a catch #TheBoyfriend," a person wrote.

Gensei leaves The Boyfriend in episode 9
In The Boyfriend season 1 episode 9, Gensei picked Ryota to accompany him to work a shift at the coffee truck. Although the latter agreed, he was unaware that it was Gensei's last shift, as he had made up his mind to leave the show.
Recalling their journey so far, Gensei told the Netflix show star that he had decided to graduate from the Green Room early.
"So much of the fun that I've been having in the Green Room is because you've been a part of this experience with me," Gensei said.
The Boyfriend cast member recalled the first day when they had to write anonymous letters to any one participant who they were interested in and said he made a mistake in the beginning. He told Ryota that he thought the first letter was from him. Gensei assured the latter that he shouldn't worry about it because he was "fine."
He added that his confusion was a good thing since that misunderstanding led to him having feelings for Ryota. However, The Boyfriend star said that it became apparent that Ryota was interested in Kazuto and added that he wanted to support their budding romance.
"And what I wanted to tell you is I am going to graduate from the Green Room today. I haven't told anybody else, though. Yeah, I shared my feelings with you. I didn't expect any answer from you. I thought it would be nice just to express my thoughts to you," he said.
Fans of the show took to social media to react to the early departure and were sad to see Gensei leave. However, they were glad he was vocal about his feelings toward Ryota.
Epsiodes of The Boyfriend are available to stream on Netflix.
