Love After Lockup, a cult favorite, released its fifth season last year and aired episode 39 on September 20. Previously on the show, fans saw Hope and Arthur, a popular couple, coping with problems most couples face after their partners are released from prison.
Hope wasn't too happy about Arthur not being able to provide for her yet, while the latter maintained that it was becoming hard for him to find a job. He also had issues with his mental health, a result of the atrocities he had encountered in the prison.
Amidst all of this, when Hope asked Arthur to get married to her in the last episode, he didn't seem very keen, as he told her he wanted to work on them first and see how things went. In the latest episode, though, Hope brought Arthur to meet her family to introduce them to someone she saw a future with.
However, Love After Lockup fans weren't very happy with how they interrogated and treated Arthur. They raised questions about his mental health and finances and even said they visualized Hope getting married to a doctor or a lawyer. Fans took to X to comment on the same.
"Hope not landing no doctor or lawyer. Her family trippin," said one fan.
"I understand Hope’s family are concerned about her but I don’t like their tone with Arthur," said another.
"Hope’s family really needs to be giving this energy to her unstable a*z too!" a third fan said.
"What do you do for a living besides run your mouth? Maybe ask your sister why she picked up inmate to be her man? Hope just sit they’re like an idiot not even trying to defend this man. Talking about his mental health and his breakdown was hitting below the belt," another chimed in.
Many Love After Lockup fans also criticized Hope, firstly, for putting Arthur up against her family and secondly, for not defending him when they were aggressive with their interrogation.
"Hope threw Arthur under the bus with her family and then sat quietly while they ran over him. It was f*cking diabolical. I can't stand this heffa. Arthur deserves better," an X user wrote.
"IMO, Hope set Arthur up. Her grandpa was a correctional officer, her sister studied criminal justice. This could’ve gone so differently. Go home to your family, Arthur. Work on yourself," another user wrote.
"Hope wrong for putting Arthur on the chopping block like this. I’m sure his self esteem isn’t the best already," read a comment.
"I'm unsure what this family expects from a man that got out of prison a few months ago. That's who Hope picked," another comment read.
Hope met her sisters before introducing Arthur on Love After Lockup season 5 episode 39
Hope met with her sisters on Love After Lockup before introducing Arthur to her family to give them insights into her relationship and tell them what Arthur was like. At lunch, Hope revealed that she had a boyfriend and that it was a long-distance relationship, referring to Arthur's prisoner status.
She told them they met in prison, but he went back to prison on the same charges—the theft of a car because the "justice system was screwed." She said he had been out of prison for more than 2 months and was currently trying to get a job as he lived with her.
The sisters were shocked to hear that he lived with Hope and were shocked to see Hope providing for her man and her family. Hope then told them about his mental breakdown and said that she was being patient because he was going through a lot. Many fans of Love After Lockup weren't impressed with Hope laying out such crucial information on Arthur so casually.
New episodes of Love After Lockup season 5 are released every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on WeTV.
