The Voice contestant Edward Preble explains the reason behind his distinct way of speaking

Edward Preble sang Frank Sinatra's Luck Be a Lady during the third night of Blind Auditions. The 19-year-old singer hailed from Fernandina Beach, Florida, and had a knack for old romantic songs. The "crooner" had a distinct accent to his speech, which was not native to his hometown. Consequently, after his performance, he explained why he spoke that way.

"When it comes to the way I speak, it might've been the music I listened to and the accents people used to have. Slowly but surely, I really enjoy talking like that," Edward said.

The Voice contestant added that people his age "didn't really jig" with his "jive," calling him off-putting, but it did not bother him. He admitted he did not want to be anyone but himself.

A student of music at Hofstra University in New York, Edward stated that music was an essential part of his identity. Everyone on his father's side of the family was a jazz musician. Naturally, he embarked on the same route, hoping to make a career out of his passion. Before stepping onto the stage, he hoped for a chair turn from coach Michael, a jazz expert. Michael spent his career following legends like Sinatra, Deam Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Tony Bennett.

"I don't want this music to be forgotten. Bublé made it popular again, so he gave me a chance, even though we've never met," Edward added.

The Voice contestant's performance immediately earned a chair turn from Snoop Dogg. However, it took a little longer for Michael to press his button. He turned his chair only after Edward perfectly executed a tough lyric delivery.

He explained that he took a while to press his button because he was "highly protective of this genre." Michael convinced Edward to join his team when he said he loved the genre more than anyone could ever know.

"Edward is a really special kid. Not only in how he sounded, but his personality. I had nobody in this genre, the great American songbook, crooners. I'm really excited because I have a lot of confidence that I can help him a lot," Michael said.

New episodes of The Voice air on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 pm ET only on NBC.
