Kim Kardashian recently revisited the traumatic events of the 2016 Paris robbery, revealing more about its enduring impact on her mental health. During one of the episodes of The Kardashians on June 22, 2024, Kim spoke of her attempts to get over her traumatic past and the progress she made with the help of therapy.
Kim Kardashian was held at gunpoint and robbed in her Paris apartment during the Fashion Week in 2016. In the night, two armed men wearing masks entered the place and escaped with jewels worth millions.
In another episode of The Kardashians, aired on July 18, the Hollywood star went further into how the robbery affected her, especially her method of coping with stress and trauma. In a recent conversation with her sister, Khloé Kardashian, Kim shared things she learned from therapy sessions.
"My therapist said, 'You think calm is your superpower. I think you are so desensitized from trauma that you literally are frozen in fight or flight.'"
Kim Kardashian explained how this observation resonated with her.
"[My therapist] was like, 'One time in life, something happened, and you remained calm, and that worked for you. So you will always choose calm.'"
Khloé Kardashian's insight and Kim Kardashian's reflection on the situation
During the candid moment, Khloé Kardashian offered an opinion that Kim could be overly calm during stressful events due to the 2016 Paris robbery ordeal. Khloé noted a complete shift in Kim's behavior after the incident, recalling Kim's previous behavior. She highlighted how Kim would previously become upset over minor issues like someone touching her clothes.
"You weren't calm before. Kim, you were a lunatic."
Khloé continued,
"You were never calm as a teenager, in your 20s. You cried about everything. You were bratty. You threw tantrums. Everything stopped after you got robbed because you stayed calm in that situation, and you even said, 'My calmness is what kept me alive.'"
Reflecting on this transformation, Khloé added:
"That's when it started. It doesn't take a f**king detective to figure that one out."
Details of the 2016 Paris robbery
On October 3, 2016, Kim Kardashian had a terrible experience early in the morning. Five men handcuffed the concierge of her Paris hotel and ordered him to open the door of her room, as it was informed by the French Interior Ministry.
As soon as the men broke into the house, they tied Kim and threw her into the bathtub while the other was robbing her of expensive jewelry, according to a source who spoke to E! News.
In an interview with David Letterman in 2020, Kim Kardashian provided a full account of what happened. She indicated that the robber threatened her while she was only in a bathrobe and that he pulled her toward him. She believed that she was going to be sexually assaulted and thought to just accept it, that it was going to happen and to get ready for it. However, she was then tied up with handcuffs, zip ties, and duct tape.
During the robbery, Kim Kardashian engaged in a desperate conversation with the hotel concierge, who was also held hostage. She was confused about what was happening and whether they were going to die. She pleaded with the concierge to convey she had children and a husband, emphasizing the urgency of her situation.
The investigation into the robbery led to significant legal actions. In November 2021, two French judges charged 12 individuals in connection with the incident. The charges included robbery with a weapon committed in an organized gang, kidnapping and forcible confinement, and criminal association, as confirmed by a judicial source to E! News.
