The Challenge Season 40 aired part one of its season finale on January 1, 2025. The segment consisted of four checkpoints including an overnight challenge as the eight remaining contestants battled it out for the grand prize of $400,000.

The last checkpoint of the episode which ended on a cliffhanger, saw the contestants counting coins and having to sing every thirty minutes. The segment received backlash and was termed the "worst final" ever. However, one alum from the franchise, Wes Bergmann defended the show's singing portion.

The MTV star said that fans were trashing the portion because they felt it wasn't hard enough when the final had "already been capped" at hard enough.

"The singing is mental warfare," he said.

"Nail in the coffin" — Wes Bergmann responds to online comments about The Challenge's singing portion

On January 2, 2024, Wes Bergmann took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to chime in on the online chatter about The Challenge Season 40's finale. He said that he didn't think fans should be trashing the singing portion and recalled Rivals 1 where contestants had to wake their partners up with a memorized poem.

Wes Bergmann said that if they were unable to, they had to suffer a penalty each time and compared it to Season 40's singing portion and called both of those "silly." He said there was "something about being forced to do something silly" after they had been "broken".

"That really puts the nail in the coffin," Wes wrote.

The Challenge alum also commented on Battle of the Eras' Karma point twist and the montage was played during the episode. Wes said that it was the "most entertaining 60 seconds" but he couldn't help but term the eliminated contestants as "jealous haters."

"Like, since when does the feelings of people who got last place in the challenge matter?" he wrote.

He took a dig at CBS' Big Brother alums and said they could say "jury management" all they wanted but could also "f*ck right off" with that argument. Wes argued the contestants voted based on who had not won yet.

"That alluded to the fact that even Leroy didn't vote Bananas highly (Damn I hope we find out that vote.) Karma points need to be on the list of good ideas that Challengers just outright ruin when given power," Wes wrote.

What happened in The Challenge Season 40 tonight?

The season finale of The Challenge 40 started with the contestants spending the night on the ship named Sinister. They had five hours of rest before the finale began.

TJ Lavin told the cast about the Karma Points twist but did not reveal how many points each contestant got. Instead, he explained the finale and said they had to complete checkpoints to search for tokens. Since they were in the middle of the water, the contestants had to swim back to the swim after every checkpoint.

In the first task, The Challenge stars had to swim to shore, solve a 3D puzzle, and swim back. Jordon and Michele took the lead while Kyland and Rachel finished last respectively.

In the second checkpoint, they had to swim to Ghost Ship, dive underwater, and memorize symbols. They had to recreate the same symbols onboard and swim back to Sinister. Jordon and Jenny finished first while Kylan and Michele placed fourth.

In the third checkpoint, The contestants had to swim to the beach, race 1000 steps, and follow the given clues. they had to solve a mystery using these clues before swimming back. Jordon and Jenny maintained their lead while Kyland and Tori finished last.

The last checkpoint was an overnight one during which the contestants had to go through a big bag containing thousands of coins. They had to count them one by one for 30 minutes before they headed up to the deck to sing a song for 30 minutes. The process continued till every player finished counting their coins.
