America's Got Talent season 19 aired a brand new episode on Tuesday, July 16. While there are multiple competition shows for singers and dancers to showcase their talents, AGT has over the years presented itself as the stage that grants an opportunity for all types of performances — comedy, magic, mimicry, and more.
In the latest episode, a comedy duo from Japan called Schumacher appeared on the stage with a unique act. Their performance involved putting on different costumes and headgear while posing to give the illusion of an animal. The audience stared in disbelief while the judges laughed at what they saw.
However, America's Got Talent judge Sofia Vergara was impressed enough to grant the Japanese duo her second Golden Buzzer, shocking everyone inside the studio. AGT fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their take on Sofia's decision. Most fans were unimpressed by the decision, but some were satisfied to see an unusual performance receive the Golden Buzzer.
"I remember when #AGT was legit. Now it's a joke. The golden buzzer was given to the most stupid act ever," one fan commented.
"That has to be the most ridiculous, but funny, act to ever get the Golden Buzzer. @AGT #AGT," another netizen wrote.
America's Got Talent fans were surprised when Sofia Vergara suddenly hit the Golden Buzzer.
"Girl, golden buzzer for that? #AGT," one person wrote.
"so sofia vergara can give a costume change a golden buzzer but not a man literally balancing himself on barely anything #agt," a fan tweeted.
"How did this get the golden buzzer? I enjoyed the act, but it wasn't golden buzzer worthy. #AGT," one netizen tweeted.
"Sofia, what the heck? These guys are noot #GoldenBuzzer worthy! It was the worse act I have ever seen on #AGT!," another person wrote.
Some America's Got Talent viewers were satisfied with their performance. They felt that atypical performances should also be allowed to earn the Golden Buzzer.
"Sofia just made my night. I was really hoping it wasn't going to be the singer #AGT #GoldenBuzzer," a fan wrote.
"Well at least it wasn't a singer that got the last golden buzzer. Ngl least it's unique and that's kinda what this show is about??? #AGT," another person wrote.
"Hot take: I'll take a weird nonsensical animal-costume act getting an #AGT Golden Buzzer over another singer," a fan commented.
Schumacher gets the Golden Buzzer in episode 7 of America's Got Talent season 19
Japanese comedy duo Schumacher walked on the stage with a translator, who helped them converse with the judges. Ryu and Yuya, the team members, had known each other since school. In their debut episode on AGT, the contestants expressed how they were in awe of the USA and complimented the country's hospitality.
Schumacher said they had been performing across Japan for the past 10 years and were excited to present their talent abroad for the first time. As their performance started, one member wore an animal-printed costume, while the other made him wear a mask shaped like an animal's head. He then arched backward to make himself look like an animal standing on all fours. The illusion left the audience rolling with laughter.
The America's Got Talent duo dressed up as multiple animal figures. They started with a pony, then gave the illusion of a zebra, followed by a wolf. Lastly, the men put on a brown-printed outfit and posed together to look like giraffes. The audience and the judges cheered for them and applauded their comic timing.
America's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell was surprised by their content. Meanwhile, Sofia appeared confused about the concept of their act. However, amidst her confusion, she stated they deserved the Golden Buzzer.
"It is like a dance, or a puppet, or a transformation, quick changing, I don't know, like, I'm very confused, cause I thought it was ridiculous. It's like a nonsense. I don't know what it is but I really, really think that you deserve this," said Sofia.
As golden confetti filled the stage, Sofia's decision amazed the live audience. She justified her decision by mentioning that Schumacher's performance was the "most fun thing" they saw in a week.
In the same episode, America's Got Talent season 19 singer Mia Sanchez wowed the audience with her cover of a power-packed Billie Eilish song.
