Season 9 of The Real Housewives of Potomac premiered on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The segment, A Crash Course in Deflection, started with a re-enactment of Karen's recent DUI. The other cast members struggled to process the accident, wondering how Karen was doing.
They agreed that Karen's recent activities introduced them to a completely different side of the cast member. They watched a series of charges against Karen flash across the screen. Ashley worried about Karen's well-being since it was a "repeated offense." Meanwhile, Mia pointed out that Karen should not be a danger to others.
As the episode progressed, viewers saw Gizelle take Karen out for lunch a month after the DUI accident. However, Gizelle's efforts to know more about the case failed to pay off after Karen refused to speak about it. Instead, Karen shared that her turbulent marriage and her parent's death affected her state of mind the night of the incident.
The Real Housewives of Potomac fans did not appreciate Karen's comments about her partner and late parents. They felt she tried to avoid accountability for her actions by pinning the cause of the accident on other people. They took to X to criticize Karen for not owning up to her faults.
"Karen...regardless of Gizelle or anyone else being messy...you got a DUI. Own it and stop deflecting," a fan wrote.
"I love Karen but I think we need some accountability and maybe she needs to realize drinking isn’t probably the healthiest option for her like this is her second dui," a netizen tweeted.
The Real Housewives of Potomac fans slammed Karen for bringing up her parents and marriage while discussing the cause of the accident.
"I love Karen but blaming a dui on your parents passing away 6 years ago is crazy, especially when it’s her second dui. She’s gotta go to therapy and rehab," a user reacted.
"now KAREN those things happened YEARS AGO. what we’re not gonna do is sit up here and lie. you got a DUI because you drank too much and tried to drive. you ended up f**king around and finding out," a person commented.
Other fans of The Real Housewives of Potomac called Karen out for not admitting her mistake and finding reasons to justify her actions.
"Karen better take some accountability with this DUI. Drinking and driving isn’t to be taken lightly," another fan wrote.
"I honestly want to see #Karen being transparent about her accident and take accountability. She was driving under the influence which is irresponsible she could’ve called an Uber especially since she’s had a DUI before. This will be her second DUI!" a user tweeted.
"Hmmmm I like Karen but I don’t like how she’s now owning this DUI girl you weren’t in an accident you got behind the wheel drunk and could’ve killed someone, hell even Shannon fell on that sword," another person reacted.
"She’s really sitting here, at her big age, on national television, coming up with excuses for why she got behind a wheel and drove home drunk. Inexcusable. Unacceptable. Disrespectful. Unbelievable. Typical low down, dirty behavior from Karen," one netizen commented.
The Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen tries to rationalize her accident to Gizelle
While discussing Karen's recent DUI accident, Gizelle confessed she was so shaken by the news she could not wrap her head around it. She added that Karen was not one to "do stupid stuff." Hence, it surprised Gizelle when she saw the litany of citations and felonies Karen was charged with, ranging from license suspension, reckless driving/speeding, DWI, and more. She admitted it was not the Karen she knew.
"It was uncharacteristic of the Karen that I know," Giselle said.
After hearing The Real Housewives of Potomac star's concern, Karen reassured her, saying, "You know your friend." Karen refused to divulge more about the accident since it was an active case. She explained that she would talk about it when she would be permitted to.
While speaking to the cameras, Gizelle confessed she was not trying to be "shady" or "messy," but only wanted to support her friend. When Gizelle asked The Real Housewives of Potomac star about her husband, Ray's reaction to her accident, Karen said that although she did not blame him for anything, she wished he emotionally supported her.
"I think that everything that I'm going through contributed to my accident," Karen said.
She stated that the grief from her parent's death and her marriage problems with Ray affected her state of mind, contributing to the mishap. She claimed it had "something to do" with where she stood emotionally during that incident. The female cast member explained that while dealing with the loss of her parents, she forgot to take care of herself.
The Real Housewives of Potomac airs every Sunday at 8 pm ET on Bravo.
