The Challenge 40 episode 9, An Era of One, premiered on October 16 on MTV. The episode showcased the cracks that began to form across the 4 eras and the relationships between them, creating paranoia and uneasiness.
After his elimination in episode 9, Devin broke his silence on his relationship with Johnny Bananas. He revealed an incident where the latter tried to manipulate him into thinking that he wanted to leave the show.
In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, published on October 16, Devin further discussed the incident when Johnny tried to turn Michele against him and later denied doing so. He said:
"He [Johnny] used a vulnerable moment of a friend [Michele] in an attempt to pin her against somebody [Devin] that was going against him in a game, and that is pretty pathetic."
In the recent episode, the contestants participated in the "Bottoms Out" competition, where Rachel emerged victorious, while Devin and Tori finished at the bottom. The winner picked Kyland and Kaycee to face the losers of the first competition in the Arena game.
The 4 The Challenge 40 contestants competed in the "Cable Connection Showdown" arena game with Kyland and Tori taking the victory and Devin and Kaycee being eliminated.
The Challenge 40 star Devin shares the reasons behind Johnny Bananas' actions
Earlier in the season, the competition show presented audio of Johnny having a conversation with Michele, telling her that he thought Devin was using her as a pawn in his game. However, Johnny later denied ever having that conversation.
In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Devin shared his thoughts on the incident and Johnny trying to "drive a wedge between" him and Michele.
After recounting Johnny's actions that fans saw on The Challenge 40, Devin revealed the reason behind it and the story that the viewers were unaware of. He shared that Johnny approached him at the toga party and told him that he wouldn't be able to stay on the show as he had a "lot of s**t going on back at home". Continuing the story Devin added:
"It's the oldest trick in the book. I said, "Johnny, I don't believe you." He said, "No, seriously, after three weeks I'm going to have to find a way to get out of here." I said, 'You're lying to me, and so if you're still here after six weeks, I'm going to help you leave.'"
Johnny remained on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras after week 4 and did not leave the competition show "gracefully" as he had claimed he would. Unsurprised by Johnny not following through with his plan, Devin stated he did not care and was ready to face anyone who stood before him in the finale.
Johnny, however, exploited Devin's relationship with Michele by using her vulnerable real-life situation against her in the game. Explaining how Johnny executed his plan to drive a wedge between them, Devin shared:
"The way that he did that was by attempting to convince her that I am a complete dirtbag, because I know the situation between Michele and Callum from [season] 39.
The Challenge contestant further added:
"I know how difficult that was for her, I know how painful it was, and so to insinuate to her that I am doing the same thing, that she's not worthy of love, that she's not worthy of somebody actually liking her, that the only reason that I would even be interested in her is to advance my game, would mean that I'm an absolute POS. "
Devin found it "pretty pathetic" that Johnny chose to exploit Michele's "vulnerable moment" to take a jab at him. He questioned Johnny's motives, asking whether he would have still had that conversation with Michele if he didn't see Devin as a competitor.
The Challenge 40 episodes are released every Wednesday on MTV.
