Dancing with the Stars premiered season 33 this week on ABC. The dancing competition featured a new set of celebrities competing for the Mirrorball trophy. This included television stars, movie stars, athletes, and famous people from different walks of life.

One such contestant was Anna Delvey, famously known for being the inspiration behind Netflix's Inventing Anna. DWTS fans commented on the cast member's participation in the show, given her history with the law. While some were in favor of her being on the show, shared a different opinion. One person wrote on X:

"Very disappointed that @officialdwts chose to put Anna Delvey and her bedazzled ankle monitor on this show. Giving her a platform is downright disgusting. She's a damn criminal"
"She clearly didn’t pay her restitution in full if she’s serving a probation. She’s a convicted fraudster and con artist who used a fake identity to steal money from people. That falls woefully short of the values of this show and what it is supposed to represent. FAIL," a fan commented.
"Anna clearly doesn't want to be there, hopefully she goes first, how do you want to claim reinvention when all you have ever been is a con, a fraud, sorry ezra hopefully they make it up to you next season but nobody is feeling her bc she has been dragging doing the show," a tweet read.

Dancing with the Stars season 33 fans commented on Carrie Ann's statements about Anna:

"Carrie Ann Inaba stating that she's not "pro or against" anything Anna Delvey has done is wild! Being on #DTWS for being famous for being a convicted con artist shouldn't be a thing...the casting department must be desperate to platform her!" a person wrote.
"I hope people give Anna a chance and don’t just vote her off because of her past actions. Carrie Ann was right about saying something," a fan commented.
"Carrie ann is actually so annoying. like we all know what anna did and she just made it more awkward by bringing it up lol," a tweet read.

Some Dancing with the Stars fans supported Anna Delvey:

"Anna saying her history as a criminal shows she’s determined LMAOOO IM CRYING please keep her on y’all she’s reality tv gold," a person wrote.
"Anna the icon you are. “I’m happy I don’t have to do that dance again.” I was screaming. People need to just realize that’s her personality and she is so unserious and I love that for her," a fan commented.

In Dancing with the Stars season 33 episode 1, Anna Delvey was introduced to the public as the last celebrity. Ahead of her performance, she was introduced in an introductory package where she briefly touched upon her past.

"In 2017, I was accused of multiple kinds of grand larceny. I did serve my time, And Dancing with the Stars is a way for me to show people a different side of me. My prior history shows I'm pretty determined. It's a quality to channel into something positive," Anna said.

The season 33 contestant brought attention to her sparkly ankle monitor. She explained that she "overstayed" her visa, but because she was in jail, it was "hard to leave." She added that she hoped to change the public's opinion of her and said she was going to "reinvent" herself again.

Anna and Ezra performed the Cha-Cha to Sabrina Carpenter's Espresso and received positive feedback. Carrie Ann Ibana pointed out the shift in the mood as soon as the Dancing with the Stars season 33 participant came on stage.

She said that although she was not "pro" anything that Anna had done, she could imagine that it would have been "scary" for her to be on the reality show. She urged the fans to "give her that space" and to focus on Anna's dancing.

DWTS fans were critical of the dancing competition to cast Anna Delvey on the show and were vocal about it online.

Dancing with the Stars season 33 will return next week with a brand new episode on Tuesday, September 23, 2024, on ABC.
