Episode 3 of The Masked Singer season 12 was released on October 9, after the series premiered in late September. The third episode was titled Group A Finals: Soundtrack of My Life and it saw two contestants, Woodpecker and Ship, biting the dust.
The person behind the Woodpecker was revealed to be Marsai Martin, the 20-year-old who gained fame with her appearances on ABC show Black-ish and the 2019 movie Little. Another contestant to be disclosed was The Ship, under which was Paula Cole. The 56-year-old was famous for hits such as I Don't Want to Wait.
Fans of The Masked Singer flocked to X after Woodpecker's elimination because most of them could easily guess the voice behind it, and questioned why the judges weren't able to call it. Many of them were also surprised by the reveal.

"WHAT I TELL YOU!!!!!" said one X user.
"Y'all got it! The Woodpecker is Marsai Martin! I had no idea she could sing like that! Did you?" said another fan.
"Woodpecker has to take it off. It's Marsai Martin from Black-ish. No one got it right," a third one commented.
"I feel like Woodpecker is one of the most obvious Masked Songer contestants ever and I truly do not understand how none of the judges have even mentioned the right person yet. Like have none of them seen Blackish??" another said.
Most of The Masked Singer fans said they guessed the face behind the Woodpecker mask correctly. People who didn't know were pleasantly surprised.
"I told you from episode one it was Marsai Martin as the woodpecker," an X user wrote.
"What did I tell you?! I guessed Marsai as the Woodpecker from the start!" another X user said.
"Whoa! Marsai Martin was the Woodpecker the whole time!" a third one said.
"Woodpecker was eliminated! And it was Marsai Martin! Kinda been a while since I've seen her! Of course the Buffalo also killed it!" another fan tweeted.
The Masked Singer panel guesses for the Woodpecker
None of the four esteemed panelists on The Masked Singer could figure the Woodpecker's voice as that of Marsai Martin's. Robin Thicke thought it was Liza Koshy behind the mask, while Rita Ora hinted at Keke Palmer. Ken Jeong said it was Quinta Brunson, while Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed it to be Tatyana Ali.
Marsai was put in the bottoms after she performed Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae. She then faced off with Buffalo and The Ship on the song High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco. Woodpecker was the first to get eliminated so The Ship battled with Buffalo to Fleetwood Mac's song Go Your Own Way.
For her voiceover with hints, Woodpecker said:
"I come from a long line of strong chicks in my family tree. And all of us lived under one roof. Talk about a lot of perfume, pantyhose and pink! My great-grandmother introduced me to jazz and Ray Charles and passed on her love for music."
She added that her maternal grandma encouraged her to follow her dreams while her other grandma encouraged her to dream of going on The Masked Singer season 12. She said that her performances were dedicated to all the women in her life who supported and encouraged her through her journey.
