Where is Angela Simmons from? Reality star comes under fire over her new accent

On July 19, Angela Simmons appeared on The Breakfast Club podcast. She discussed her relationship, selling cakes, a recent gun purse controversy, and her fitness. When asked about her accent by hosts Charlamagne tha God and DJ Envy, she said it might be influenced by her partner, though she didn't name him.

The podcast host claimed that even though she was from Hollis, Queens, New York City, her accent seemed southern. Addressing the same, she said-

“Yeah, it's probably my man. It's probably the influence of a man. We just never stopped hanging, and then like, we was together.”

She further said-

“I don't even hear myself, but I literally think once I started dating him, like, it just, who knows..”

Nevertheless, once the video of the episode was uploaded on Instagram and went viral, netizens took to the comment section of the clip to criticize her accent. Many even called it “fake” and “forced”.

Angela Simmons is now facing fire over her new accent

Recently, Angela Renne Simmons, who was born and brought up in Queens, New York, U.S.A., appeared on the Breakfast Club podcast on July 19. While talking, she exhibited a southern accent, which was not her natural one. Even the podcast host was surprised to hear her accent and asked-

“What is this? You about to do a country album or something? If anybody closed their eyes, they would swear you from the South…”

She then said-

“I can't even help it. I've never seen this before…. I don't even hear myself. But I literally think once I started dating him, like, it just, who knows?”

The host then pointed out-

“For real? Like, you're a New Yorkie…. You sound like a southerner trying to sound like New York.”

Simmons then joked-

“Don't say that because they used to say my accent from New York was so strong, you can't tell me I'm Asian. Oh, now that changed… You can't say I sound like I'm from somewhere else. I'm from New York…”

The host then joked and said that she seemed to be Drake attempting to talk like a New Yorker. She went on to say that the man she had been dating influenced her.

Apart from this, Angela Simmons also opened up about the criticism she faced for taking her gun purse with her to the 2024 BET Awards. This happened after Simmons arrived at the awards ceremony on Sunday night, June 30, with an emerald, diamante-covered purse shaped like a handgun.

Since the 36-year-old Growing Up Hip Hop singer posed on the red carpet with her purse pointed up toward the camera, fans started to criticize her for her choice of accessories. Some even accused her of rooting for gun violence.

Later on Tuesday, July 2, Simmons apologized on her official Instagram account saying that while she found the purse's design to be "cute and unique," she had made the wrong choice in utilizing it as an accessory to draw attention to her appearance.
