The reality TV show Love After Lockup follows the lives of couples who previously met while one partner was in jail. As these couples try to build their lives together after getting out of prison, the show captures the complexities and challenges that arise.

In the September 6 episode of Love After Lockup season 5, the focus is on Arthur and Hope's relationship as they deal with trust issues caused by Hope's past when she cheated on him. Arthur finds a picture of Hope with someone else, which makes him feel insecure again. Hope quickly offers to get rid of the picture, but Arthur doesn't trust her right away.

In a confessional from episode 37, he says:

"Do I trust her today? Not a 100% trust."

As Arthur deals with this situation, Hope complains that he hasn't been emotionally available since he got out of prison. Arthur admits that his time in prison has left him emotionally scarred, and he's still getting used to life outside of prison; he needs time.

Love After Lockup episode 37: Arthur's struggle with Hope's past infidelity and lies

Finding a picture of Hope with another man makes Arthur's trust issues the main topic of conversation in Love After Lockup. The picture seems harmless, but it triggers deep insecurities because of their troubled past. Arthur's response is a mix of unease and suspicion, so Hope offers to throw away the picture to make him feel better.

Arthur doesn't trust Hope as much as he used to because she has cheated on him and lied to his sisters about their relationship while he was in prison. Arthur feels insecure and betrayed, and these feelings resurface when he sees the picture.

Hope seems ready to make things right and move on, but Arthur remains stuck in the past, struggling to rebuild their relationship while recalling the painful events that occurred.

Arthur’s battle with his inner feelings and Hope's frustration in Love After Lockup

Arthur has been quiet since he got out of jail, which makes Hope angry. She tells him that she is having difficulty communicating with him because she feels like she is "talking to a wall."

Hope urges Arthur to open up about his feelings, hoping that addressing his emotions can bridge the growing gap between them. However, Arthur hesitates. He describes himself as being in "robot mode," focused solely on achieving stability in his life after prison.

The psychological toll of prison, marked by the monotonous and oppressive environment, has left Arthur emotionally numb and fearful of vulnerability. Arthur says he is not ready to face his feelings yet and would rather bury them while he gets used to his new life. As much as Hope wants to connect with him emotionally again, she fears this approach will worsen things between them.

For the unversed, Arthur spent four years in jail for theft and evasion charges. In the show, he experiences a panic attack after Hope asks him to open up about his feelings. He starts breathing heavily and crying. The producers take him outside to get fresh air.

Episodes of Love After Lockup air every Friday at 8/7c on WE TV.
