The popular ABC dating show, The Bachelorette, premiered season 21 on Monday, July 8. It featured 26-year-old Jenn Tran, an aspiring physician assistant, as the Bachelorette. Jenn revealed that she came into the show determined to find a husband. The franchise's first Asian lead, Jenn grew up with her single mother and brother James.
She mentioned that, as the first Asian-American lead, she wanted to leave a lasting impression on the viewers and make her community proud. Viewers noticed that Jenn refrained from randomly kissing the suitors and only kissed Sam M., the suitor to whom she gave her First Impression Rose. Although Sam M. captured Jenn's attention, The Bachelorette fans were surprised by her decision to choose someone with a personality as bold as Sam's.

Jenn gives her first and only kiss to The Bachelorette season 21 suitor Sam M
Sam McKinney, a 27-year-old contractor from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, used his "Southern charm" to create the initial impression. Upon meeting Jenn, he asked her to imagine a typical Saturday morning with him by her side, 50 years into the future. His introduction also referenced Jenn's "it's shot o'clock" moment from After the Final Rose.
Sam M. revealed that his goal was to find someone he could fall in love with. Determined to become a husband and have children, he opened up about his ex-fiancee, who abandoned him after cheating on him. As the initial introductions ended, Sam M. was the first to have a private conversation with Jenn.
During their conversation, he mentioned that he was uninterested in casually dating and intended to walk away with a wife. He said:
"What I want out of this is somebody that chooses me the same way I would choose that person."
Ending his speech, he leaned in for a kiss, but The Bachelorette lead Jenn moved her face to give him the cheek. While speaking to the cameras, she confessed that although the emotions were there, it did not feel "like the right moment."
