Shark Tank investor Robert Herjavec uploaded a video from one of his lectures on Instagram on January 7, 2024. In the clip, he shared the lessons he learned throughout his entrepreneurial journey. Reflecting on his early doubts, he emphasized the importance of repeated efforts in building success.
Robert Herjavec recounted how he once felt unqualified and incapable of succeeding in business. However, it was through persistence that he ultimately developed the discipline and habits needed to thrive.
He stated in the video:
"I didn't get it and I did it again... and I think repetition creates discipline and discipline creates habits for success."
How Shark Tank investor Robert Herjavec's persistence led to entrepreneurial success?
The early struggles of starting a business
In the video clip, Robert shared how he doubted himself early and how he found it difficult when he first considered entrepreneurship. The Shark Tank investor explained that he had a "bias" toward believing that building a business was only for those who were skilled.
"I had this belief that building a business was for other people—people who were smarter, more qualified, or more polished than me." he wrote.
This belief made him feel unqualified to leap into entrepreneurship, and he underestimated his capabilities. He elaborated on how he could not even imagine succeeding because he thought he lacked the right skills, such as the ability to speak effectively or navigate business challenges.
However, Robert still highlighted the fact that life has ways of creating discomfort that pushes for change. He said he was only inspired by the pains of his present situation.
"Either you accept where you are or the pain of your current situation will force you to change."
The Shark Tank investor explained that this moment of discomfort became the catalyst for his decision to step forward and try his hand at business.
The power of repetition in building discipline
Robert described how his first attempt at making a sale ended in rejection, but rather than letting that setback define him, he chose to try again.
"I reached out, tried to make my first sale, got rejected, and then did it all over again," he explained.
In his Instagram post, Robert further explained how discipline and persistence are essential to success. He wrote:
"Success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through small, repeated efforts. The more you show up, the more disciplined you become. And over time, that discipline turns into habits that push you forward."
He emphasized this point in the post caption, where he reflected on his earlier thoughts that entrepreneurship was not for someone like him. He shared:
“Eventually, the discomfort of staying where I was pushed me to take that first step.”
Herjavec underscored that building habits and being consistent can help in transforming one's life. The Shark Tank investor encouraged anyone feeling stuck or unqualified to take that first step, suggesting:
“You’re just one step, one attempt, one habit away from creating real change in your life.”
